November 20th, 2007 8 Comments

2005 Toyota CelicaToyota has cautiously told the automotive world the Celica will make a European comeback in 2009.

Markus Schrick, vice president of Toyota Deutschland was speaking to Automobilwoche about the possibility of speed restrictions on the autobahn before breaking the news.

Mr Schrick said Toyota plans to introduce a replacement for the Celica sport coupe in Europe in 2009. The Celica - which had the reputation of being a hairdresser

I believe it only because:

(1) The FT-HS (pictured above, unveiled at 2007 Detroit motor show) is clearly the spirtual (if not nominal) sucessor to the Supra. A concept was built, and it's rumored that it will eventually go into production (fingers crossed).

(2) The Lightweight Toyota sports concept ( http://www.7tune.com/?p=112 ) would make a perfect new Celica, and the test mule is already being developed. All they have to do is agree to slap the nameplate on it, and there you go.

I'd love to own one or both if they are put into production :D

As I was just saying

What form the new Celica might take is open to debate, but the recent rumblings of a low-cost RWD model might hint at the future.

that is the FT-HS

It is a hybrid supposedly able to do 0-60 in 4 seconds.

A lot of non gossip car magazine sites have said toyota has given the green light for production on the FT-HS, and its just a matter of time.... but again I can't say 100% its going into production. but I hope so :D

Toyota does have the people to make great looking cars, its just a shame that up until now they havn't been making use of their full potential. up until now toyota has the design pzazz of google. plain jane in the looks department but it does a fantastic job mechanically.

I don't really see how the FT-HS is the spiritual successor to the supra... Not when you have the LF-A blowing our minds with a test mule running laps at tracks with a V-10 under the hood. Besides, the FT-HS is a V6 and a Hybrid, ireally only connected to the real supra by the very new SARD-hybrid-supra. I personally think that RWD coupe in the works will be a newer incarnation of the AE86, seeing as how interest in that car has skyrocketed along with the popularity of drifting. It's a scion marketing wet dream. "SHIZZY, YO! You tellin' me it's a mad tyte drift hatch and it's a scion? DAYUM, IMA GET ME ONE OF THOSE. JDM FO LYFE."

So screw technology and improvements on design? That doesn't make a whole lot of sense...

Realistically, any high performance sports car made by Toyota is the "Supra successor" no matter what they call it.

The point isn't that it has a specific engine or drivetrain; the point is that it's a high performance Toyota sports car.

It's not as if there is genetic code to be inherited. It's a fvcking car.

dood, the supra came from the celica... believe it or not lol, the supra is really the little sister. kinda backwards in my opinion...

Totoy Bibo
11-20-2007, 11:15 PM
Hmm true. The Celica came years before the Supra. The Supra was first created to have a seperate "sports cars" version. Hence the Celica Supra. The Celica was FWD and sporty while the Celica Supra was considered a real sports car, RWD with umph!

Or what most people think. [Emblems..]
Celica = Swan - Finess and Smooth.
Supra = Dragon - Fierce and Powerful
MR2 = Eagle - Flight toward aerodynamics
Corolla = Flower - ????
ETC...

Half right, celicas were (and are in my garage) rwd. 1979 brought the celica/supra which was basically a second gen celica with a straight 6cyl engine.

the celica was the dragon though.... wasn't it?

Yes

You could consider specific attributes of a car to be the DNA. Such as the Supra's I6, RWD, GT cruiser.
Early Celicas were FR's and the GT-4 was AWD. Later incarnations have been FF -- there's almost no correspondence among these vehicles.

They've all had different engines and drivetrains. It's just not that straightforward.

And of course, the first few generations of Supras were essentially just more powerful versions of the Celica ("Super Celicas").

A Toyota high performance sports car, unless branded otherwise, is basically the Supra.

Celica = Swan - Finess and Smooth.
:nono: The original Celica emblem is a dragon, not a swan. It was lent to the Supra, which was essentially a "Super Celica". Later on, it became its own car.

Its nice to hear rumors of the next gen celicas but i also heard of the next supra coming out like in 2007 back when it was 2004 and now 07 is almost over and no supra. I believe it when i see it. Enough with speculations and stuff. I only hope that toyota can atleast compete with other car manuefactors in the future to have that void catagory of fun true sports car to drive for young toyota fans out there. We have enough gas savers and grocery shopping cars already.

Only 1.5L flat?!? Might do for 2200lbs (If my math is right) But an up graded 2zz would do or a supercharged version with a top rpm limit of 10 grand would be nice on th e1.5 But a 4 second hybrid would be also nice but what ever they do give is some balls or it could be call an electric hair dryer dressers car.

Did any one see that Toyota seem to be using a Scubie doo platform?

FF's work well in rally racing :D

But we stooopid Americans grew up wanting to drive fast in straight lines from a dead stop; RWD favors the relevant physics for that.

The first person who brings up drifting, should be banned immediately.

Toyota cares about car enthusiasts who spend money. If their market research tells them that a large enough group of such enthusiasts exist, these will go into production. Simple as that.

The Supra, Celica, and MR2 didn't sell as well as Toyota would have liked, and so, sadly, they were taken out of production.

well for one thing no matter how much people wanted to put together two companies and make it one example honda/acura, scion/toyota, mercury/lincoln they are their own company in terms of sales marketing and wanted to be their own brand. Scion is not toyota and toyota is not scion although it is for the time being. Scion's trying to be their own company in the future even though it comes from the toyota corporation. I dont like it when people say Scion is toyota and toyota is scion or honda is acura and acura is honda. When somebody want a honda they go to a honda dealership, they dont go to an acura dealership to look for hondas. Granted Scions are somewhat new and not many vehicles are available so you will find it in a toyota dealership but in the future, toyota with a toyota logo in front of a car is a toyota car, not a scion car. that's why people give a rats ass if its a toyota or a scion. Same engine or whatever people do like the name plates in front of a car and it does make somewhat distinquished. Try put a scion nameplate on a celica. People will laugh and vice versa.

Punctuation. Grammar. Sense.
These all help you make a decent post. My failure to use proper grammar (noun+verb) was intentional.

Scion is a division of Toyota, as is Lexus. Acura is a division of Honda. Their vehicles share drivetrains, engines, chassis designs, and numerous other parts. The separate marques are nothing but marketing ploys. You've been played by the system. Thank you. Game over.

One thing to consider...if they release a new "sporty coupe" (which IMO the tC is NOT), it will probably decrease the resale value of the 7g Celica as we know it.

As of right now, the newest "Sporty" model Toyota sold is the Celica. The resale of our cars is above-average with 00 gt's going for 6-9k & GTS's going for 7-10k, and 03-05's going for 10k+ minimum.

One thing I've always noticed w/cars is the drop in resale value upon the introduction of a "replacement" model.

Thank you. Game over.

but to top it all off Yamaha Is Reaping All The Benefits Cus Its There Motor.

No it isn't.

Before you continue here's something for some edification.

2) No flaming, harassment, racism, bigotry, or trolling. Personal attacks are grounds for being banned. If you have a problem with something that another member has posted in the forums contact webmaster instead of posting a personal attack.

"Just a short notice to all site users, asking those so inclined, to give a little more thought before posting in these forums with the sole intent of "flaming" another user or group of users. Or posting with the sole intent of instigating or illiciting flame type replies in any forum, Off Topic included. It can't help but be noticed the increase in this type of activity on the board lately, and this seriously detracts from the intended purpose of these forums - to bring together a community of automotive enthusiasts to a place where the free exchange of intelligent discussion is the goal. The first and foremost ideal in obtaining this result is simple, mutual respect!

It's well understood there are many members, from many different backgrounds, with many differing interests, using these forums. That's a good thing. And because of this, it is also well understood that there will be many differing viewpoints on many topics, not the least among them being things automotive. What should lead from this though is thoughtful debate, not mindless, childlish, flaming. Such latter behavior will no longer be tolerated here. Disagree with someone's posting? Sure, go ahead and argue your point, but by engaging your brain before letting your fingers at the keyboard. Disagree with someone on a more personal basis? Take it to PM or email."
