View Full Version : Bad wheel bearings?

What are the symptoms of bad wheel bearings? I've had a low, grinding/whirring noise coming from my front wheels for the past few weeks after swapping my rims+tires. After reading up on it, it seems like it could be wheel bearing issues. The noise only occurs at ~10-30 mph, and it's definitely not the brakes.

I'm thinking either the wheel bearings are going out, or my tires are just annoyingly loud at certain speeds. I'm gonna change my tires soon anyway, but I thought I'd ask just in case.

those symptoms are pretty much it, my rear wheel bearing went out but it got to the point where the whole wheel would wobble.

Make sure the lugs are tight.

Bad wheel bearing sounds like a loud tire.

Yeah same thing happened to me.

When I put 18's on Civic and I ****ed the Wheel Bearings up.

I hate that loud ass noise.

does it make the noise only when your going straight, or does it get louder when you turn?

If it makes a loud noise when you turn it's your ball joints.

I'm gonna bump this up and add some info:

I switched my rims+tires back to stock over the winter, and the noise went away completely. But as soon as I put my summer wheels back on (17x8, 35et FN01R-Cs with brand new tires) the humming came back, and now it's louder than ever.

Anyone know if different wheels can cause more stress on the bearings (resulting in that horribly annoying noise)? If so, I'll consider selling my 5Zigens. :( (For the record, I've had 2 sets of FN01R-Cs, one 17x7 and one 17x8, and both caused bearing hum. My two other sets of wheels--17x7 Fliks and stock rims--rode smooth and quiet.)

Hey ever figure anything out? I just swapped to my Summer tires now, and my Front Right tire is making a weird noise and strong vibration, and same thing only between 10-30 mph... At high speeds everything is fine...
I think perhaps maybe my Balance weights fell off (or tire is unbalanced)... or maybe the tire is screwed up because of a bad alignment in the past :( ....

Nah, I still got the noise. I'm planning on getting my wheels rebalanced this week (though I don't think that's the issue). The noise is more in the rear for me, though. I'll let you know whenever I get it fixed...

What tires do you have? and was your 5zigen balanced?
I had bad wheel bearing last summer, not only it bad screeching noise it also started thumping, I can feel through the padels and hear the thump. Once I took the bearing out, it was split into half.

I have 235/40/17 BF Goodrich KDWs. The tires are already known for being pretty loud, but it sounds like there's more than tire noise going on, especially around 50mph there's a noticeable grinding noise. Why it doesn't happen with the winter tires, I'm not sure.

I had the 5zigens balanced when the tires were mounted a few weeks ago, but I've had some vibration on the highway, so I'm gonna take them back to the shop and get them rebalanced.
