Ok i have a 2002 celica GTS 6 speed. The other night it was running great with no knocking when letting out the clutch at 1st gear. Now today its back when i let out the clutch at less than 1500 rpms it freaken knocks.
So what is the problem?>

using 93 octain and 5w30 castrol gtx

is the ecu messed up or a sensor?

Try lowering your octain that might help

The car is like that when new. After you've broken in the engine, the ping will go away.

I have about 3900miles now

its still not broken in?

I remeber i did my 3rd oil change with 5w30 and it went away . before that with 10w30 it was awful.
hopefully evreything is fine.
Anything lower than 93 i see it worse and if i let out the clutch around 2k its not there. The funny thing is when the ping wasnt there i could let out the clutch at 1k and it was smooth as silk

You have changed the oil 3 times with under 4K miles?!?!?!

Sounds to me like your either running lean or maybe you have some glowing carbon deposits... prolly ought to take it to teh dealer to get it looked at - request a Master Diagnostic Technician only- they give you Joe Blow oil changer guy for something like thins and it will never get fixed.

the car last week was running great and now it is back. Im not sure if it is the belt tensioner or what . i thought it was fixed in 2002? I will take it back and have them look at it but get this. I took it back about 2 months ago and he said the tech said it was normal??? to knock. ieven at idle the car has a distinctive knock to it. Im not sure what to do should . have a master tech look at it? or tell them to replace the belt tensioner.? It seems like i hear a knock then a slight squeal but the knock is worse.

HELP PLEASE! if i cant figure this out or toyota doesnt fix it i will never buy a toyota again.

Is it possible you are hearing teh tapping noise form the injectors?

If not get a stethescope and listen to the engine at the valve cover, front of the head, just below the deck of the block, and down towards the bottom of the block. You can also kill cylinders one at a time bu disconeccting the coil packs and listening to see if the knock goes away (this WILL turn the CEL on).

what I'm getting at here is you need to quantify and isolate the knock.

I think you have the infamous Toyota Tap. Almost every Celica makes a tapping sound. Its honestly a gorgeous sound to me.

I hope he meant raising, too. Don't lower it.

I am taking it to the dealer saturday morning i will keep you updated. I just couldnt belive that my engine could be fuc* up already at 4300 miles on the car. I do take it to the lift alot but wasnt that what the engine was designed for. Why doesnt freaken toyota just develop a 6 cylender with 240 hp like the supra and put it in the celica. freaken stupid to put out all that horspower in a little engine i reallly doubt that the GTS Engine will last past 120k miles putting it into the lift every day.
Is the 2002 belt tensioner a recall? The funny part today was when i let out the clutch at first gear nice and smoothly while giving it gas at around 1200 rpms the dam car knocked and then i heard a squeal. How is it possible that it wasnt doing it after my 2nd oil change now it is back after 300 miles on the car?
If i new this car had so many problems i wouldnt of paid 25k for it instead i would of bought a 6 speed maxima with 255 hp which has more room , more hp , fast as hell, way more options and probbly way less trouble . If any of you have seen the new maxima engine it looks to me that it is way more advanced than any toyota engine i have seen unless you are driving a lexus. i do like the celica's handleing alot and body style thats it.
I will probbly drive the car for a yhear then sell it to some teenager out of highschool and just take the hit.
Unless these toyota techs find something wrong witht he car this weekend then i will say screw toyota forever .
The first time i took it in the tech was like "that is normal for the car to knock and you just have to let the clutch out around 2300k rpms and drive it like an old truck. hah anyway why didnt do it when i first bought and test drove it. Well the tech says , things get broken in ok what ever

Just went to the dealer and they are ordering a belt tensioner for a 2002 gts lol
anyway i thought my car did not have that problem in my year. Also the guy said corrollas have the same problem. if they fix it now wont it just come back?

I just wanna know why you have changed your oil 3 times at 4k miles???..... I would do just what your doing take it to your toyota dealer.. make sure you dont have Aftermarket parts on unless your dealership doesnt care but sometime or MOST of the time they will not fix sh*t if you have aftermarkt parts on.. Unless its TRD... but anywho let us know what comes of this...

Darkstar... I agree it is a gorgeous sound :) it wouldnt be a celica if it didnt have the Toyota Tap ;) hehe

I'm going to assume there is a problem with a belt tensioner on these vehcles jeez. Why does that seem wierd to me  A car with less than 10000 on the odometer to me is a car that should be absolutely free of problems. Is it the A/C belt tensioner (i.e. idler pulley) or the timing belt one?

it's the a/c tensioner (at least i think) mine needs to be swapped, but all it does is squeal when it rains.. the tap is completely normal.. it almost sounds like knock if you smoke enough weed.... lol
