I just came from court today for my arraignment and i pleaded not guilty to 2 charges. speed contest and 50 in 35zone.
My bail was set at $385 + penality assesment which came to $1049,a preposterous amount.
I received forms for written declaration.
I've checked out ticketassains but it
won't help me as it does not deal with cases like mine. Anyone who can help or have experiences with speed contest drop me a line : jaysong00@yahoo.com
also on the ticket it says speed contest but the court papers indicate "exhibition of speed" instead of speed contest. aren't they supposed to be two different charges?

wtf,... I got two tickets too. First for racing(on ticket it says "exibition of acceleration") and second for speeding 60 in a 40. All I did was I plead guilty for the racing and I took defensive driving for the speeding ticket. I paid around $290 for the racing, $50 for court fees, and $25 for defensive driving. So total cost was $365. But $1049 is fu#ked up. Did you get arrested?? Cuz I didn't

You didn't get reckless driving thrown in there too? If not, consider yourself pretty damned lucky.
I had reckless driving, participating in a speed contest/freeway racing, speeding 125/55, and various other charges having to do with modifications done to my car, but pretty much got off scott-free. It was a first offense tho, so they offered me an option: by pleading "no contest" and throwing myself at the mercy of the court (not an admittance of guilt), the judge granted me a DANC plea or "Deferred Acceptance of Nolo Contendere" plea, in which the judge does not pass immediate judgement, but gives you a specified amount of time to do what he declares (be it community service, drivers ed, etc) after which time is passed and you've accomplished all that you were told to, the case is dismissed and the record wiped clean. If you fail, you're punished to the fullest extent of the law. My condition was only to stay ticket-free for a year (ANY ticket), and pay a "contribution to the general fund" (kinda like a fine, but saying it in a nice way since it's not a conviction) of $200.
Every state has different laws tho regarding this stuff. I don't know is this is available to you, but if you have a lawyer, it's worth asking about. Provided you have a clean record of course. Also, here in Hawaii, DANC pleas are a once-in-a-lifetime thing, you only get to use it once.
And yes, exhibition of speed and participating in a speed contest are two completely seperate charges. Look into that. Exhibition usually has to do with revving up and/or burning out. Speed contest is the actual act.
Hope that helps!

I'm ok with the $385 fine but i don't understand why I got this penalty assesssment. it's not due to failure to appear. I made it on time.
I asked the judge and he wouldn't explain it. anyone familiar with this PA?

I assume many of us advised you to get a lawyer for this.
Did you pay a lawyer their $200?
No? well, it just cost you $1000.
Maybe it's not to late, try getting a lawyer to actually work this out.
You are asking us about PA law? Pay the damn lawyer to advise you on PA law, that is their job. All we can do is guess.

Join the club, i got a ticket for $1080. $350 + penalty assessment. the penalty assessment is 170% = $595. So, 350+595+ public defender fee + court fee. yeah, it sucked, and i'm still paying for the ticket.

And just think your insurance is now going to go up as well. So you still will be paying for those tickets for a couple of years.
You play, You pay. It's as simple as that.

I just got my fine in the mail for a speeding ticket yesterday. I was speeing in at 76mph in a 55mph zone. I got the ticket back in May of this year, pleaded guilty, and mailed the ticket in. I got the fine yesterday...and it was only for $105. ::shrugs::
