View Full Version : Front Strut Bar Causing Chopped Tires?

Just before I put my car away for the winter I had an issue where my tires were extremely worn on the inside edge after about 8k. I had the alignment done when the new tires were put on and had it checked when I noticed how chopped they were. The alignment check came out perfect. So now I am wondering what would cause this wear problem. The only thing I can think of is the APR front strut bar that I put on about the same time as the tires. Has anyone else had this problem with a strut bar?

Definately an aligment problem still, more specifically a toe problem.

^^ what he said, my APR bar doesn't bother anything and it's been on for more than two years

That was what I thought too but why would the alignment come back perfect? I work at a dealership so I had it put on the machine 3 times.

Well from the look of your car, the ride height isn't stock.
Why would stock specifications work then?
If you see wear on a tire like this, it's most likely a toe or camber problem. He should have adjusted these settings accordingly.

Hey maybe its a wheel balance problem? *shruggs* just a suggestion. do you feel vibration on the steering wheel when your driving fast?

I started to notice vibration at high speeds at the end of the fall but I guess I just chalked it up to the tires already being F*ed because it wasnt viberating earlier.

What about your shocks?? Stock shock and aftermarket springs have a short life span.

No, struts still feel fine.

with your drop did you get the right stuff to pull your tires in from negative camber? if not then your wheels are cambered in causeing the inside of the tires to ware faster. alignment is probbly staright on as far as pointing forward, but in turn they are leaning in cause a negative camber??? my geuss. I had the same probblem when i droped my car.

The thing is, my car has been dropped for 2 years now with no tire wear problem. Any reason why all of a sudden the drop would matter?
Do you mean cupped tires as opposed to chopped? If so its worn struts as well.

well obviously there rubbing on something. why would you think your strut bar its not even in the wheel well where your wheels are?!
What size tire / wheel are you runing.
Im guessing its rubbing the frame when you turn sharp.

You would be able to tell easily if the tires were rubbing on something.

You are right the strut bar is no where near the tire but I was concerned that it was effecting the camber. The tire is not rubbing on anything....im not a complete retard here.

if the tire is not rubbing on anything how are you having chopping issues? If your having choped tires its rubbing/hitting something coarse.
bad chamber would not lead to choped tires. more cupping or odd wear.
strut bars dont put much if any force on the struts. they are there so when you do heavy driving it doesnt let the front chasis bend.

I realize it would be strange for the strut bar to be causing wear which is why I asked in the first place. And there is deffinatly nothing rubing the tires.
Why dont you post a pic of the tires man and then we will know what the heck your talking about. I for one don't know what a chopped tire is. is there actual chunks ripped out of it?

The tires are not the greatest but I have used them a few times in the past and never had this problem. I cant take pictures of the tires as they are gone now.
