A hammer works.

But really. I just skimmed through the Installs section, and couldn't find anything. Try searching.

You have to remove the plastic panel that attaches to the lift gate first. To do this you'll have to unscrew the screw thats going into the handle. The plastic handle should come out then just pull on the plastic panel because the only thing holding it on are 8 plastic clips. After the plastic panel has been removed you can access the wire and socket that connects to the license plate bulbs. Just twist the socket of the bulb that needs replacing, replace the bulb, twist the socket back in, and put the plastic panel and handle back on.

Is this a law? Because personally, once one of my light bulbs in the back goes out, I'm just taking out the other one.

Its not really a law, police officers just prefer they're working so that they can more easily see your license plate.

Both of my bulbs actually burnt out. I've been pulled over.. hmm... 5 times for it now. gotten 3 warnings in 3 different townships.. But i'm sure if i got pulled over again for them i'd be getting a failure to make repairs ticket..

I'm just lazy and haven't gotten around to fixing a bulb that I can't see when i'm driving =P

Actually, it is law in all 50 states and DC to have illumination on the rear license plate of every vehicle and trailer.
