1) say you have two of the exact same cars one with a 4 speed auto and other with a 5 speed manual. Now in order for the 4 speed to hit the same top speed as the manual, the automatic would have to have longer gears thus making the acceleration slower. right?
2) say you have to same cars again and you are going to take them both up to redline and then shift, is it true that the 4 speed automatics rpms would drop lower than the 5 speeds because the 4 speeds gears are longer. thus once again making it slower.
Send some links having to do with this if you know of any

Sounds like one of my friends with his Auto Tib.
Anyway, obviously the guy is a dink. Is his suby auto or manual? People tend to make reasons why their **** is better than everyone elses even if that **** isnt true.
Kick him in the teeth and tell him that manual is faster than auto. Also gets better gas mileage.

tiptronic is a joke, all it matters is how many gears you have. Autos are bad cause most are 4 speed.

Traditional autos are usually slower for two reasons:
1. Gearing.
2. Loss through the torque convertor.
If you have two cars, one auto and one manual, both with 5 speeds and exactly the same gearing (therefore eliminating gearing from the equation) the auto will still be slightly slower because a clutch transfers the power with less parasitic loss so more of the power reaches the ground.

Always been true in the past. However, the latest high end VWs and Audi's have "automanuals" that are actually dual clutch manuals shifted by computer. I think it's called DSG. Other manufacturers are also introducing them, and they have the advantage of being more fuel efficient and faster than automatics.

^ Hence my use of the word "traditional auto". DSGs and other similar designs are as you pointed out manuals, that can operate in automatic mode. Tiptronic, Shiftronec and other such trannies are autos which have a "manual" mode.

Yep. I love my auto, but 'tis the truth. Slush boxes lose ~10 -12% more power than their manual counterparts and also tend to have taller gears.
But never mind that because all the newer sport cars will be offered with ultra fast double-clutch "manumatics" (i.e., manuals, that can be operated automatically and without a clutch pedal), and these will blow both standard manuals and slushboxes out of the water.
Technology FTW!
