I drive a 2000 gts and I want to add a turbo. It is my day to day car and will not be racing it. I am looking for high acceleration not overall speed. Please bare with me, I don't know alot about cars and engines so someone else will be doing the mods. I am looking to spend between $3000-$5000. Can anyone give me some advice on which turbo to get and any other related advice?

Well first off you're going to need a whole kit unless you just want a turbo...pm Smaay, I think he's selling his kits now...

Yep talk to Smaay, MWR or Turbokits.com - all 3 make a nice kit for a daily driver. Also please read the turbo FAQ if you have not already done so - lots of good info in there.
FYI $5000 is on the low side when all is said and done

you are looking at $5000 at least with tuning and installation. I would say Garrett turbo probably gt28r. Smaay is the man to contact for sure. His screen name is Smaay, send him a private message.
...by the way welcome to the board.

This is actually very good advice even if it sounds a bit jaded.

definitely do some search to find out the set up you want and by then, you'll have enough money for a great set up

I've gotten some great feedback from customers on our new GTS turbo kit. We have them available to ship with your choice of turbo. It's a complete kit that includes Power FC, injectors, etc so you have everything you need.
I could be wrong but I think Smaay's setup is not a complete bolt-on kit and is more of a high power tuner setup intended for those who plan to do some custom work to complete it. I apologize if this is incorrect, I haven't talked with Smaay in a while. I know he does good work.
We've had enough of that "other" kit through the shop for repairs and complete reworks that I'd recommend you do a search if you're considering it. Customers usually end up paying a lot more to buy it and have it fixed than they'd pay to buy our kit in the 1st place.
I would not recommend anything less powerful than a PFC for engine management in a turbo 2ZZ.

I am sure those are old examples of the kit... I have personally installed our current kit on the GT and GTS and everything fits and runs as it should. We just did a stock GT w/ TRD Axel back... Before w/ TRD only 120WHP, After 201WHP at 5.5-6PSI. A 80 WHP gain at a very safe boost level and tune. This was our kit out of the box w/ GT2860R ~10hr install.
Why don't you try to sell your kits based on their merits instead of cowardly trashing your competition? Don't think we don't hear from customers that have called you for questions about your kit and all you do is bash us. Most of them get turned off by that type of assault and end up going with us anyway... I have had many chances to talk trash about MWR, but have not. I choose to stay honorable and dignified and hopefully the customers see the benifits of that!

and so the pissing contest commences.
I have to say though it is refreshing that we actually HAVE 3 different kit manufacturers to compete with eachither.

Just offering some friendly advice. If you had seen what I've seen over the years with the fitment issues, cracking manifolds, leaking hoses, etc you'd probably understand better. It kills me when a customer rolls in with any kit that I can see at a glance is bad but who has already invested in it and decides to proceed with an install and tune. By the time we get many kits sorted enough that they function and offer any level of reliability the custom has often paid much more than doing one of our kits or even a fully custom setup. Often the customer didn't budget for these expenses in the first place and it ends up being a huge burden. I do my best to warn people up front.
My experience is more with the old Hass kit rather than the more recent turbokits.com variation so I'm sure there have been improvements. I hope the kit is working great for people. The Toyota community needs as many good aftermarket options as it can get. I wish turbokits.com the best of luck and hope there are no hard feelings.

back to the topic.
For the amount of money you have and for what your goals are, looks like a supercharger would be the best fit for you. It will increase acceleration and give the power the GT-S needs. Plus your knowledge of turbos is still limited. Look into the greddy kit or contact smaay like people are saying here. He is also putting together a supercharger kit for our cars.

I rode in a Greddy supercharged car this last weekend. The car drives like a very fast N/A Celica. If horsepower is your goal, you definitely want to go turbo but the Greddy kit is much less expensive and could be had for your $5000 figure. You could easliy see 215-225 whp out of that setup. If you use the 2nd gen AEM intake and pay the guy I know a small fee, you could probably even coax him into programming a Power FC with his map. His car has been fully dyno tuned and as long as you use the same intake, it should work on any car.

Damn, I never realized the intake carried such impotance and it had that much variation.

If all the fuel components are the same, intake is 95% of the reason why maps can't be shared between cars. If you're running the same fuel components and same intake, the exhaust will make a small enough difference that a well-tuned map should handle it. Understand that the whole system is based around the reading from the MAFS, which is why you can theoretically share maps if you have the same intake.

That being said the OP (wherever the hell he went) will have to make sure all his components really are the same and then go and get a decent tune...btw, about his original question, someone really needs to do a writeup/sticky on how to read a compressor map and maybe give the maps for the turbos common to the 2zz kits (ie, GT2871, GT3071, w/e the hell Smaay uses on his kit) so we stop getting this question, then they can just look at the damn maps themselves and figure out which turbo would be best for their power goals
