Automatic Shifter Question

I've been ripping out my interior and I was going for the piece around my shifter when I noticed the tab above the letters. I opened it up and there was a button inside.. pushing the button pushes a rod down and hits a button under the shifter, anyone know what this button is for?

Yeah this unlocks the shifter and puts it in neutral if you happen to get it locked up somehow.. or vice versa.. I think...

yup. it unlocks the selector in case your have push the car.
