View Full Version : What's the best way to keep my car from being stolen?

I'm going to be moving into an apartment and was wondering whether to get reserved parking indoors or outdoors. Outdoor parking is a big lot and indoor is 2 level underground parking. I'm scared my car will get stolen if I park indoors in the apartment parking garage because there's less people around to scare off the theives.
What do you guys think?

Get a club? (for the steering wheel)
2-way paging alarms are pretty neat too.

unfortunatly nomatter what people can jack the car. a club may deter but if they are serious they dont care, shoot can just break the window. bomber's suggestinos are some of the better ones. also a 2 way FM alarm is good as it can reach a mile + but if your car is under allot of cement the it will limit range. car covers are not always a good idea as they actually attract more interest in the car and makes it stand out more. if you have a c/f hood get locking hood pins then disconnect the bat so they have no luck at getting the car to start and no way to get into the hood.
for lugs if your wheels are a concern, the pepboy/autozone etc "lock" lugs are all universal for tuners. if somone goes and buys a pack of $30 lugs from there they now have a key to take your wheels. and certain ones a 1/4" socket end actually fits in the openended ones and you can just take them that way. So invest in some higher end, unique key lugs that are not key insert style but where the key goes around it.

it all comes down to if someone wants your car bad enough they are going to get it. It wont matter if you have a club on it or not. Sometimes the alarm will be a deter but it depends on how professional the theif is. The civic SI in my sig got stolen right out from under my car ports in between 10 and 11:45pm no glasss, no nothing and there was a club on it and an alarm... and there were people still awake in the building 5 ft in front of the carports.

Definitely park indoors.
Do you have to have a Key or card to have access to the garage?
Also when you park it in the garage, invest in a cheap car cover, so people don't know what vehicle is under there anyway, and might steer them off.
Invest in a starter kill or something that will keep anyone from starting your car with a screwdriver and a popped key lock cylinder.
Finally and most importantly, maybe you should look into other apartment complexes if you are so worried about people stealing your car at this one.

you could get some wheel locks if you're really that worried. will be a pain to put them on/off every time you use your car, but at least your car can't be driven with them on.

don't think that's a good idea. think about it... how many removable hubs are out there? i guess the best one are the ones that come with a lock and key, but why carry around a steering wheel? I think a hidden key/lock kill switch would slow the criminal down. Or just a normal kill switch would do it.
You can always build a cage around your car :D

Get a Storage unit and ride a bike to it. I pay 175 a month for mine and have no problems. Only I ran out of money for insurance so I don't think I can put it on the street this year... :sadpace:

i can't believe no one has suggested Lo Jack or the equivalent yet
if you can afford it, get it
it is true that any ride, if the criminal wants it bad enough, it can be taken but there are many ways to prevent that and just not be plain stupid about one the biggest investments in your life
couple others:
1. Wheel Locks, get one set, maybe even two different sets of Keys the odds of having both keys goes down considerably and even more so if you buy keys like Gorilla which use differing patterns and keys aren't as common
2. I would highly recommend this:
Unbreakable AutoLock X
http://www.amazon.com/Lawman-The-UNBREAKABLE-AutoLock-X/dp/B0007ZAJQ8
Double-Nickel chrome look is a must-have for any tuner! The Unbreakable AutoLock X simply locks up the brake or clutch Pedal, making your car or truck impossible to drive. Guaranteed! The Unbreakable AutoLock X's solid steel deadbolt lock system is virtually drill-proof, cut-proof and freon-proof, under normal circumstances and use. BRAKE vs. STEERING WHEEL The Unbreakable AutoLock X uses the brake pedal or clutch pedal arm because their thick solid steel construction makes them one of the strongest parts of your vehicle and virtually impossible to cut. Steering wheel locks are typically bars that attach to the steering wheel & prevent it from turning. Most steering wheels are made of thin metal & foam because they are designed to bend out of the driver's way in an accident. A car thief can easily cut the steering wheel using a bolt cutter or hacksaw, remove the steering wheel lock & steal the vehicle. Features: Hardened steel construction with heavy duty lock lock Prevents use of brake pedal or clutch Includes highly visible steering wheel cover and window decal Because of a unique brake pedal arm design
3. I would get that before your Standard Club....again, double the Protection
4. a Kick a$$ Alarm System
5. Common Sense, never leave valuables in your car, lock up the Glove, etc. etc.
i would say Indoor unless you can actually see it from the Outdoor spot, hopefully there's a camera or gate/guard of some kind
good luck w/the new place and if you do take these steps, it should allow at least a bit more peace of mind

BTW, if you do get the Unbreakable AutoLock X before a standard Club, it is a bit of a pain to put on at 1st, but you'll get used to it ;)
i would also use the Brake rather than the Clutch in the beginning to get used to putting it on, that thing weighs a good amount

Alright, did some research into a removable steering wheel and it doesn't seem practical. But I do like the Unbreakable AutoLock X, it seems very interesting. My car already has a engine kill switch installed but it's kinda useless when the guy that installed it tells me that it's always the same switches you press to deactivate the system on every car they install the system in. I've already decided to get an alarm installed for the car which will be done in the next month or so.
I'm kinda paranoid because a couple of years ago my parents got their Acura TL stolen. I was really attached to the car because I drove it the most so I don't want that to happen again. But if they want your car they'll get it no matter what.
Thanks for all the replies.

I use delay window switches that you have to activate after a X numbers of seconds. If you don't, ecu shuts off for a long period. I use injectors switches, fuel pump switches,
The celica's parts aren't easy to resale so the theft value is lower.
Indoor for sure.
Steering lock.
Alarm system with own small battery.
1 window switch. (relay that you need to activate after X number of seconds when the car is started, else it shut off some important parts, ecu, fuel pump, injectors, etc.)
2-3 anti start switches.
I was living in St-Laurent, west, before, I got my civic ALMOST stolen 2 times, first time, it was a newbie, he removed the steering lock, shut off the alarm via the under hood battery (I did not had a second battery), then he shut off the anti start box, he started the car and after 20 seconds the car stops because of the window switch and relay box! He must of looked like a *******! He flew.
2nd time, 2 weeks after, I guess the same *******, he did the same thing and demolished all the dash and steering cullum tring to find my box! Dummy did not find it and after that I never had any problem with my 2nd batt.
I drilled the box under the car, side of the shifter linkage! try going under a unjacked car with a lowered suspension, good luck!
Buy a pit bull and train him to be the meanest dog you have ever seen. Then just leave him in the car the whole time.

U could make a manual-kill switch to your starter. So when u leave ur car unattended, u simply flip the switch off and all power to the starterr is cut off at the switch (even if u break the column or and even insert the key and try to turn the car over its not going to turn on because the starter has no power to it). Its like having a bad starter when off. But when u need to drive u flip the switch to ON and ur ready 2 go.
Jus make sure u hide the arming ''flip switch'' where no one could find it. like in the glove box and lock it!
parts needed:
-a flip switch or a button on/off switch
-inline fuse wired to the power side of your switch
-about 10 feet of 16ga wire.
-electrical tape

But make sure to train him to let himself out to go to the bathroom.

Does indoor parking have security camera/ security patrol? How about the outdoor parking?
Regardless of all the above suggestions, if someone wants it, thy will get it.
Get INSURANCE to cover the car, park where there's light and security.
