Picked up a new Celica a few days ago, and had a couple clutch questions.
1-When is it necessary to match revs?
2-Double clutching hurts the transmission, or the clutch?
3-Does it harm the transmission to be at higher gears when tackling hills?
4-About what RPMs do you guys try to stay near when residential driving?
5-What shifting strategies do you have for street-racing(not hardcore, just friendly)?
6-The burning smell coming from the engine when at higher RPM's is oil, right?
7-What can you do to lengthen the life of your clutch and tranny?
That's about it for now. Thanks :)

1) matching revs isn't really necessary since the synchros do this for us. i just do it when i am racing (4-2 or 3-2 downshifts). matching revs will help prolong tranny life i believe.

2) i don't know...

3) i don't think so

4) try to stay between 2-3k rpms

5) always shift at redline (or above if you have a 00 or 01) and keep the car above 6k at all times.

6) i don't know...

7) just drive normally. don't powershift or do clutch drops at 5k+. treat the car nice and it will treat you nice.

2: The driver hurts the transmission (if they don't know what they're doing). Double clutching won't hurt anything if done properly. It's mainly useful for smooth downshifts during hard cornering.

3: Only if the engine seems to be bogging. Try to stay around 3k.

5: Don't slam the shifter into gear. Just let it slide in naturally, otherwise you may hurt your synchros. This is especially important for 2nd gear on GT-S's (impossible to stay above 6000 without ripping into 2nd/chirping the tires or slipping the clutch).

6: My car had that smell when new, too. It will eventually go away.

7: Learn how to drive. :p You can toss in some Redline synthetic transmission fluid, too.

Cool, thanks for clearing those up.

your car still needs to be broken in, be easy on it. keep the speed and the rpm low.

and I did 5k several times, is that bad? I won't do it anymore I'm at 908 miles.

i put 500 miles on it staying @ or below 4k
From 500-1k miles I hit lift a few times but still took it easy.
after that................

No. That's what synchros are for. But matching revs extends synchro life.

See answer #1

3-Does it harm the transmission to be at higher gears when tackling hills?
No

High gear speed limit allows

5-What shifting strategies do you have for street-racing(not hardcore, just friendly)?
Redline it.

6-The burning smell coming from the engine when at higher RPM's is oil, right?

Maybe. But if you abuse the clutch and you smell something burning, it's the clutch lining (start saving money for a new clutch)

7-What can you do to lengthen the life of your clutch and tranny?

Drive like a grandma
DON'T DROP THE CLUTCH, DON'T RACE
change the gear oil every 40,000 miles (I recommend Redline MT-90)
