So my wife and I have a problem where every once in a while we'll be pulling into a parking spot and we bash in the lower lip of the front bumper on our Celica.
Does anyone know of some kind of proximity warning device or something that we could use to help us avoid bashing it in for the future?

bash it on what..the concrete divider?

the little curb thing at the end of parking spots, the concrete thing or just a high curb i think is what hes talking about. normal cars just get grazed on the bottom of the lip but since the car is lower it bumps into it:O
My suggestion, learn how far the front of ur car goes and park a little further back....

I've seen car places sell these devices for this purpose.
They're essentially tennis balls on a string.
The idea is to park your car perfectly. Then hang the tennis ball so that it touches the windshield but without leaning.
Then when you drive in you stop right when the ball touches your windshield.
Sounds nice but I'd imagine wind could be a factor if you're not careful.

thats for parking in your garage lol
i think he means like a parking lot or newhere with those concrete curbs at the end of the spots. no possible way that idea is portable everywhere^^
get a back up cam and mount it on the front:)

I thought he meant garage....
I use the side mirror for reference. When I see the side mirror pass about a foot of the curb I know I'm good.

LOL.. I got a kick out of reading the tennis ball method. For a minute I was trying to figure out if I was supposed to bring a portable collapseable tennis ball hanger... :gap:
I was thinking of the Camera Idea as well but then I would have to figure out how to get the camera to turn on when pulling up to a parking space. Plus I'd have to get a video screen of some sort. I could possible make it turn on whenever going less than 5 miles an hour.
Otherwise, I thought there was a device out there that would buzz at you when you were getting close to a solid object like a parking bump or a curb.
I'd like to get a lip but what good would that do if my wife will bash it in within the first week....

teach her not to pull all the way in...my car is lowered 2.5" so I always have this problem. I usually leave about 1-2' space and im still in the parking spot a good ways.

umm learn to drive/park better?? leave space b/n ur car and whatever u're pulling up to..it's common sense really..if u feel like u're too close, it mean u're TOO close..nothing wrong with leaving a lil space.

buy a reverse camera system... but mount it in the front :gap:
find one with more than one input on the video monitor, so you can use one for backing up also...
actually... that's not a bad idea now that i think about it...

You can find proximity sensors for backing up that mount just in your bumper. Use it for the front bumper...

I always try to look at the reflection of the car next to me if I have to pull in far, otherwise just pull in but don't pull completely to the curb. pretty easy, no need for a $200+ video system

how can you have problems parking such a small car ?

For my wife... I have no clue how she manages to just bash in the lip on the bumper. She drives it every day and I would imagine she should know where the car ends.
For me, I rarely drive the darn thing so cut me the slightest of slack that I don't have a feel for where the car ends. I don't have the same problem in my other Celica's so I don't always think about it when I'm pulling into a parking space in a hurry.
For my wife though, I'm afraid that getting that sense of feeling where the car is at all corners... eh.. might not be possible. So If I'm going to get a nice stylin bumper or lip.. I'm going to have to put in a few countermeasures. Even more so if I consider that after we get a new car and the Celica officially becomes mine.. I will probably throw on something nice and I don't want her bashing in an expensive imported lip or something.
As nerdy as it might seem, I might have to look into getting a proximity warning thing-a-ma-bob.

ummm...lol. this was my first car and I never had that problem. its a small car just don't pull it all the way to the front of the spot, you know its not sticking out into the road so why pull it all the way forward?

My biggest problem in the area is that they have some parking lots here where they have the curb and those parking bumps in the same space. So like I had said, I hadn't had the problem coming up the parking bump in my other Celica's. In the 02 GT though, we'd pull up and the bottom of the lip would catch on the bloomin' parking bump. Bloody thing! Either way, what's done is done and although I don't do it anymore, I don't want to take the chance with my wife driving the car and her having that lapse of judement with a nice imported lip on the car.

I'm guessing you've come down from a bigger car or something, celi's are pretty low as it is.
in fighting curb rash, just take it easy on your approach in to a spot. You're not going to cause devastatingly bad curb damage if you scrape a bit (I'm assuming you're not doing any Best In Show comps or anything anytime soon). Maybe painters tape for a few months?

Options..
1) Pay stupid amounts of money to get a screen, camera etc...
2) Pay stupid amounts of money to raise the front of the car a little
3) Get a sticker that'll remind her its low
4) Spend a sunday teaching her to reverse into spaces
4... Is the best option, unless you want a sticker screaming "THIS CAR IS LOW!" in clear visibility of the driver...
Lol love the tennis ball idea, I can imagine pulling into a carpark and having tennis balls hanging from the heavens over each space lol

Small rant but I'm sick of seeing celicas driven by chicks. For the most part (non newcelica members) chicks that drive celicas suck! Their bumpers are all dinged up and they trash up the car pretty bad. I always walk by in disgust with the empty wrappers and fast food bags laying around. It just looks like they take no pride in their cars.....rant switch off!
