Can anyone define the break in period for me? I understand you're not supposed to go over certain rpms during this period but how long should this "break in period" be? I am getting manual gt 2002 this friday and I want to know in advance so i dont mess anything up. Response will be greatly appriciated. Thank you.

Well, mine currently has about 950 miles on it. I hit some high RPMs really early on, when I first started driving it(at around 250 miles). It was mostly due to the fact that when shifting it is easy to accidentally misshift, causing high RPMs. Then again I also did a little 'breaking in' of my own at about 500 miles and since accelerate hard every now and then. So far absolutely no problems for me, except the weird smell from the engine every now and then. I'm sure this won't help you out too much, just thought I'd offer my small amount of experience. I'd say just don't give her too much hell and concentrate on not mis-shifting.

manual states that you do not go over 55 mph for the first 1000 miles. dont stay at one speed for a period of time. i'm not sure but i think it also says that you should not try to drive past 4k rpm, and no hard braking.

Dont think it will hurt it too much. Just not 0-100 slamming it. Try and take it easy.

And make sure to change your oil at about 1500 to 2k miles. Need to get the metal shavings out of there. After that, stick to the 3k miles rule, don't listen to the manual.

Changing your oil every 3k miles is the single most important thing you can do to prolong the life of your engine. And it only costs what, 20 bucks to do it on the celica? If I remembr correctly, it was about 2.50 for the filter, and 2.50 per qt of mobil 1 (and it only needed what 4.5 qts, right?). My bimmer is different story, 7.5 qts (dry sump), but still, much cheaper than going somewhere and having it done.

you're supposed to keep it between 2K and 4K, and below 55 for the first 1000 miles, i think. you can check the manual when you get the car it will tell you in there. on that note, the first day i owned the car i put 1000 miles on it....not the best idea, but my cars running strong still.

I picked up my car from Longo Toyota in El Monte with 2miles on it and the day I picked up, I drove it hard once then I took off to San Francisco. I was driving at constant 60 miles for first 1000miles. I drove that 1000miles in two days. As soon as I got up to 1000, I punched the shiet outta my car on I-5. I put another 1000 miles within three more days and they were all freeway constant speed miles. Basically my breakin' period was well over just a week after owning the car.

Despite the fact of my "not so manual followed" breakin period, my car is running greater than ever. I do my oil change every 3k miles and yes I do stick to it real well. My car is gonna hit 30k real soon and I only had this beetch for like year and 3months. Good maintenance is the key to your internals being last long and not driving and putting too much of a load could be another.
