ok, here is the problem, it's starting to do this all the time which it didn't till about a couple hundred miles ago. i'm just going down the road not sure what mile per hour but about 4,000 rpms. in 5th and i go to down shift to fourth it will grind every freaking time. the only way it won't is if you double clutch and rev the engine about 1,000 rpms or so. it only does it from 5th to 4th shift. i guess my qustion is, is this a snycro problem and if that's the case i have a 2000 GT-S with 37,000 miles on it so it would be warrnty work. any help would be appreciated.
i forgot to add that it also doesn't grind if you let the rpm's go down to like 2,000 rpm's and below.

the fact that it doesnt do it when you rev up an additional 1k rpm's seems to point at a synchro problem.
weird because most people who have this problem have it in a lower gear (2nd/3rd).
Wise thing to do is have it checked out ASAP.
check back, im interested in whats goin on here

I have the same problem, it will also grind from 6th to 4th. Any idea how many hour Toyota is going to charge for repair, my warrenty has expired, I'm at close to 50K.

That is the sound of you needing a new tranny. I had the same problem in the same gear. It's the synchros. Got my new tranny (unfortunately, with the wider, 2002 gates), along with an ACT Street Clutch and Fidanza FLywheel. They did the tranny swap in a single day (quite impressive).
I had 22000 miles on my 2000 GTS when it happened.

you dont need a new tranny.. you have to replace the worn synchronizer ring and most likey 4th gear itself... its a lot of work but it should be covered as its part of the 60,000 mile powertrain warranty.

It depends on how worn it is. Toyota ordered me an entire new transmission and replaced it.
