View Full Version : HELP!! CIG LIGHTER...Dead!!

Help-please! My cig lighters dead.Ive got a hardwired radar detector wired to the back,which still works. But my phone charger doesnt work anymore. I bought a new charger and it doesnt work. I bought a new cig lighter assembly, and it doenst work either. No fuses blown or anything.....I am completely stumped on this one!!! Can anyone help me?

Theres two wires from the radar det. cord-I ve got the hot wire bolted to the nut on the back of the lighter assembly and the ground wrapped around the riveted wire on the base.

Did it ever work after you installed the detector?

Good question Oldster. If it didn't, then you might have a loose connection somewhere.

Grab a volt meter and see if you get anything. If not check for loose connections. If that fails check for continuity.

yeah....it worked for at least 2years before it cut out. Now its sporadic when it cuts on and off. 99.8% of the time its off.Every once in a while itll come on for some reason.I cant figure it out. Im going to try the voltmeter thing, but Ill need a little instruction on how to use it first. :)

From your description you have an intermittant. The ohm/voltmeter may be of no use in that case. Pull apart your assembly and ensure that all connections are tight and secure. Since you did not cut/splice (you didn't did you?) anything something has obviously loosened up. If it still doesn't work move the assembly around while using you voltmeter to see if you can find where the intermittant is. This may require a friends help as sometimes three hands makes it much easier. Good luck.

Take it to a shop and see if they can find a problem.

hmmm..........intermittant fuses are pretty rare........:rolleyes:

the problem is a loose connection.. if you keep toying with that dash piece the white connector that connects to the cig lighter will come loose... make sure that you're connecting it to the side... theres also a wire that come off the chassis part of the lighter for ground... it looks like its screwed on the outside or something... make sure that one is still on... other than that if you're using the wires that lead into it for the radar detector and that works then its obviously nothing with a fuse...
