View Full Version : Lots of Vibration at 60MPH

I'm experiencing quite a bit of vibration in my 2002 GTS as it nears 60mph and anything above that. The whole car vibrates (not just the steering wheel).
The wheel balance must be okay because I have two sets of wheels that I had re-balanced, and I also tried my brothers wheels from a corolla. All have the same results.
I was wondering if the bearings or axel hub needs replacing. I'm looking at the shop manual 'Suspension and Axel' section page SA-55.
Could it be something else that is causing the shakes?
Thanks!

normally that is the cause of wheels not being balanced properly, bearings usually "humm" when they are gone.

your shocks could be bad. Check and make sure the tires are inflated to the right PSI.
it's for sure tires. my sister's honda passport had a very bad vibration after 45mph...the suv would shake violently like it was going to throw the passengers out. we couldn't figure out what it was. i thought it was driveshaft or rear axles and when we bought new tires, WHALA! vibration gone forever!
by the way, what's your thread life looking like? mines just starting to vibrate when i go above 60mph because my thread is all uneven because of the stupid minnesota weather.

When i took my celica in the snow one time (stupid!!) with 18'' rims with falken fk-451 tires, i had that happen after i got on roads above 30 mph. Turned out i had a crazy amount of road ice in the rims and it was throwing off the steering. so....maybe the tires arent ballanced well? I know you said u just had them balanced though..hmmm..

double check your tires.
then just move from the bottom up
tires, wheels, arms, tie rods, links, suspension, springs, mounts etc.

I'm having the same problems. Someone on here told me to get my tires balanced, aligned, and something else. I do need new tires though, so maybe that's my problem
EDIT: Getting your camber checked was the third thing to do, to be sure your tires aren't wearing unevenly

bent rim possibly, I had a slightly bent rim and my car use to shake, I fixed it now, now it just rattles due to suspension swap

okay what they said plus++++ i had an issue with my axle shaft, the bearings inside the tranny were tearing away and the car pulled TO the weak side, just got it fixed and state inspected, and found out i need lower control arm bushings as well, so i just ordered energy suspension's hyper flex master kit can't wait for those to get here . . .

Thanks for all of your responses and advice.
I'm doubting its a problem with my wheel balance. I traded wheels with brother to test if its really the balance. I get the same vibration with his wheels on my car, but his car runs smooth. I even put my wheels on to his car and it runs smooth.
But I will check the suspension. My car has been slanted towards the drivers side for the longest time. I always thought it was my imagination or slanted parking lots. But no, its actually my car. I guess its time to change the springs or shocks.
The brakes also need changing. My last visit to the Toyota Maintenance said all my rotors are warped and need to be changed. I have a set of Stoptech stage two on order.
I'll start from there and work my way up to the tougher stuff as you guys have suggested. Thanks for all you help.

^^ Wow, sounds like you found the problem(s) without our help. :D New shocks, springs and rotors should do the trick.

warped rotors should only cause vibrations when you brake, not cruising at 60 mph.

me and you are in the same boat. My icw's are bent just enough to cause an annoying and unbalanceable hop in the suspension. So I ordered new rims and tires, just waiting on them to float over....
hopefully its not my shocks, although I randomly hear my front left shock making more noise than the right one. It's like sometimes it gets binded up and has to pop (I'm for sure it's not the endlinks..these powergrids do the same thing the OEMS did). So I hope that's not a "almost blown" shock.
