View Full Version : What would look better.....Not Goofy
I just bought American Eagle 196 Rims (17" X 7.5")*Fixed It LoL* and i was wondering which tires would look better with these rims.
Its a red non-lowered Celica GT with Kamanari kit.
The shop wants to give me 205/40/17 but people say that will look goofy

Hey man, tires are not about what will look good. They are about what will hold the road well, hold up over time, and handle in the rain, road noise, shock comfort, etc. Safety before cosmetics on the tires.
ok so which whould you go with 205/40/17....215/40/17....225/40/17?

What size rim are you going with? a 225 is a wide tire. You also need to make sure you aren't going to be rubbing. But the wider the tire, the greater the contact patch. I would def stay away from the 205 if the rim will allow it.
17 inch rims and the car isnt lowered so 215 would be good?

You should be good with the 215. I do not know for certian, but I believe you would have a hard time fitting the 225 on it. I could be wrong though. What tires are you looking at?
dont know which tire brand to get, the shop suggested Falken, Sumitomo

How much are you looking to spend, what do you want out of a tire. Just looks really isn't good. I'd rather have somthing that is gonna hold the road and the corners. Are you going to have a dedicated set of snows? If so, go with the stickiest set of summer tires you can find. Check out the Yoko's, either paradas or AVS Sports, and the BF KD seem to be really good, but expensive...
im looking for looks and tires that wont make me lose control and get me killed. I live in florida so there is no snow so i dont have to worry about that. It does rain alot though.....ALOT

Well, it's gonna come down to personal prefrence then. European Car just finished up a two month break down of the major tires out there. They didn't do a test, just listed all the tires and their characteristics. Just find a max performance or high performance tire that deals with water ok. And remembr, you'll be wider than your stock tires, so when you hit a puddle, it'll be like skis, so just take them a bit slower. Most tires out there should be able to deal with water ok. Personally, I"m getting some parada's put on my M today. But my M is only a fair weater car, so I'm not concerned about how they handle in the rain. I'm looking for max grip.
i dont know a thing about tires so ill just get 215/40/17 of whatever brand the shop recommends

go to www.tirerack.com and do some research before you go. At least it'll look like you know what you are talking about, and B) you'll know if you are getting screwed on the price.
whats a decent price for 215/40/17 in your opinion?
how about these they are 101 dollars each and are 215/40/ZR-17 http://www.tirerack.com/tires/sumitomo/su_htrz_2.jsp

Well, The Kuhmo Ecsta's are supposed to be fairly decent. They aren't the stickiest, but they aren't lacking either. Basically, you get a decent tire for only 99 bucks a pop. The Parada's are supposed to be decent as well, and in that size 215 40 17, they were only 98 bucks. Go to the shop with a few different models and write the prices down from tirerack, most shops will price match.

I've heard nothing but good things about the Kuhmo Ecsta's...I would go with those. Anything is better than the tires that come with the Celica.
are these the kuhmo tires you all are talking about http://www.tirerack.com/tires/kumho/ku_712.jsp
215/40WR17 Kumho ECSTA Supra 712

I have used both kumho and sumitomo, get the sumitomo. Sumitomo threshold of grip kills the kumho, and I also found the sumitomos better in the rain. This is the best tire I have used on the celica, I say get the sumitomo. for the record, you will not have trouble fitting a 225 tire on the 7.5 inch wheel.
fit doesnt matter i mainly care about which would look better on a Red celica with kamanari kit that is not lowered with 17 X 7.5 Eagle 196 rims (RH Evo ZH5000 Look Alike)
