Not Coming Soon to a Lot Near You: Chinese Cars (http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/18/automobiles/18chinacars.html?ex=1318824000&en=a620fea68068da91&ei=5088&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss)
Every day in cities like this one, Chinese factories churn out waves of exports that flood markets in the United States and Europe: DVD’s, microwave ovens, furniture, washing machines, shoes and more.

So it is no surprise that as China’s industrial revolution advances, Western automakers and their workers have begun to worry seriously that an invasion of Chinese cars will begin soon.

It turns out it probably will not be so soon after all.

Despite growing anxiety that the Chinese would quickly seek to conquer yet another important industry, it now looks as if it will be at least another several years before Chinese automakers start exporting large numbers of cars they both design and make. They had intended to start selling their own brands in the United States as soon as 2007 but have pushed off their plans by a couple of years.

And now, some Chinese auto executives admit, it could be as late as 2020 before they will be ready to take on the world auto market.

That’s not to say that the Chinese will not follow in the footsteps of Japanese automakers, who first sent over chintzy cars that were roundly criticized, only to set new standards for the industry in later years.

Still, despite China’s manufacturing prowess, it is, for now, proving a lot harder than automakers here anticipated to make cars that appeal to Western tastes.

While Chinese cars are inexpensive and approaching Western levels of reliability, Chinese automakers have not yet brought their styling, safety, emissions and performance standards up to snuff, let alone their skill at marketing home-grown nameplates around the globe.

In one glaring example last year, a German automobile club tested one of 700 vehicles shipped to Europe by a tiny Chinese manufacturer of sport utilities. It came up with a result that humiliated the Chinese officials who oversee the mostly state-owned Chinese car industry: the vehicle, the Landwind New Vision, got the worst crash rating the club had ever awarded in 20 years of testing.

“Most of the Chinese companies that were preparing for exports have turned cautious, because this is a very difficult job,” said Lawrence Ang, a board member who oversees international finance at the Geely Group, a large, publicly traded Chinese automaker.

Chinese subcompact cars from manufacturers like Geely and Lifan have surprisingly ample headroom, but fall short of Western tastes in other areas. The exteriors of Chinese cars tend to have simple curves and straight lines that are easy for factories to stamp out of steel, but look starkly utilitarian by Western standards. Even names like Geely (pronounced JEE-lee) are unfamiliar.

China’s automakers also face rising wages at the same time the country’s currency is gradually appreciating, making Chinese exports more expensive abroad.

“It is a message for us,” said Jiang Lei, the executive vice chairman of the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, a government agency that guides the industry. “We cannot rely on cost alone. We have to improve our technology and management level.”

Any delay, however, is welcome news to Detroit automakers, which already have been trimming thousands of workers and closing plants as they continue to lose sales to foreign rivals, especially the Japanese. The extra time to prepare for the Chinese onslaught could help American automakers protect their turf.

That could help defuse tensions arising from the growing American trade deficit with China, already running this year at an annual pace of $185 billion, and still rising.

For all the fears expressed at auto shows from Detroit to Paris in recent months, China’s auto industry does not appear to have any magic formula for making cars. Like other industries in China, this one is dominated by foreign joint ventures and subsidiaries of multinationals, which are building cars for sale in the local market first and plan to export later.

Western anxieties were sparked early this year when Geely surprised auto executives by displaying a subcompact at the Detroit auto show that it had designed by itself. Target dates for exporting — as early as next year — were buzzing around. Meanwhile, Chery Automobile, a rival of Geely, announced that it, too, was planning to export a fully Chinese-made car next year to the United States.

But now, said Mr. Ang, the Geely board member, his company has no plans to export cars to the United States until “2009, 2010 or 2011.” Meanwhile, Chery has twice pushed back its target date for exports to the United States, first from 2007 to 2008, and then again to 2009.

Other Chinese automakers are even more cautious. Shanghai Automotive Industry, First Auto Works and Dongfeng Motor — joint venture partners of multinational automakers that are taking steps to produce their own cars — have all taken go-slow approaches to exports in recent months. And they are refusing to set targets for selling to advanced countries.

Chinese automakers still have strong advantages that will help them in the long run — skilled and diligent workers like Ai Biaohui, for instance, a strapping 22-year-old at the sprawling Geely operations here in east-central China, who labor for less than $250 a month. Chinese cars often retail for a quarter or more less than models of similar size in the United States, with domestic subcompacts selling at home for $7,000.

Moreover, the government supports the industry by allocating to automakers the choicest land, near deepwater ports. The site for the Geely factory here in Ningbo, for instance, is just 600 yards from the docks.

And there are other intangibles. Geely, among the more efficient makers, not only does not have to worry about unions, it even hires drill sergeants from the People’s Liberation Army to improve discipline.

In visits across the country to car factories run solely by Chinese companies, it is apparent that most are not ready for global competition.

Just by looking at the first set of pics, you can tell how cheap these cars are ... the sheetmetal does not look sturdy at all, and it's probably so thin too. Those compact cars must weigh as much as paperweights ... and I bet the engines barely even make 110bhp. The interior is cheaper than Kia, and I though Kia was as bad as it gets.

I feel sorry for the Chinese auto market. I don't think they'll ever be able to catch up with the rest of the world.

is it me or does the entire frame/chassis/everything just crumple on impact ?

So you would either be dead in one of these, or need a new car after a crash coz i wouldnt want to know the cost of repairing that sack.

On another note I heard insurance companies dont like BMW any more coz if a panel is hit/dented more then 2mm or some tiny amount in a crash the entire panel must be replaced.

shouldn't that be a policy left up to the insurance companies? as in they would be able to decide what damage warrants replacement? or is it more of a fit and finish issue, where a 2mm deviation looks like a big deal?

JAC A108 and A107 Unveiled at Auto China (http://www.worldcarfans.com/9080421.010/jac-a108-and-a107-unveiled-at-auto-china)
Euro-style is not just the envy of North America, Chinese car makers wants it just as badly and Anhui has called in the help of renowned design studio Pininfarina to achieve just that. Pininfarina is of course best known for its designs for Ferrari (599 GTB), Maserati (GranTurismo S) and other established marques.

Anhui and Pinifarina have been working on this project since 2005 and they are now ready for its unveiling. The 3-box saloon (A108) and 2-box hatchback (A107) are ready to go into production. The two cars share the same front end design for instant recognition, with the headlights embracing the grille for a sporty, elegant look.

The rear of the two cars on the other hand are purposely different, to give most cars their own appeal. The 3-box saloon is aiming to compete with the more up-scale saloon with the clean design. The 2-box hatchback will enter the sportier hatch segment and has been styled accordingly. Surely opinions will differ, but in our eyes the two cars could do well in and outside China.

They're still not to American standards, but like the previous poster said, they've improved quite a bit compared to yester-years. At this rate, I think they'll become competitive with American makers in the next decade just like the Japanese and Koreans that went through the same maturing process.

JAC A108 and A107 Unveiled at Auto China

Pinifarina should be shot for helping design this disgustingly bland pos.

WTF is sporty or elegant about a box, and taking them 3 years to work on that design and now say they are proud of it is bull****. That thing couldnt compete with any of the hatches out today, hell it couldnt compete with the ****test hatches 3 years ago.

Nice way to fail at life china and bring down Pinifarina with you.

DUH. Why did you think Gas was on its way to $4 / gallon. SOMEONE has to be making the money off all the made in china crap we all consume. And once you make that money, whats better to spend it on than a micro car that looks eerily like a Panda.

Geely 'Rolls clone' is modified (http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle.aspx?AR=248837)
[QUOTE]The Geely GE limousine that drew criticism for its startling similarity to the Rolls-Royce Phantom when it was unveiled last year will be on display in modified form at next week's Bejing motor show.

The car has been extensively restyled, getting a rounder look, especially at the front end. Inside, it gets two rear seats rather than the single 'throne' arrangement of the original concept.

The 5.4-metre Geely GE prototype was unveiled at last year's Shanghai motor show, painted black and given pride of place on a raised plinth in the middle of Geely

China's IAT-Auto to Reveal Three New Concept Cars (http://carscoop.blogspot.com/2010/04/china-iat-auto-to-reveal-three-new.html)
The most interesting prototype is the Wu Feng II which is a follow up to the Wu Feng I. It's a compact coupe with gullwing-style doors that's said to have a top speed of 200km/h or 124mph and can reach 100km/h (62mph) from standstill in 7 seconds.

The other two concept models are the eTAXI, a mid-size sedan powered by an electric motor, and the all-electric Bamboo Wind, a futuristic take on the small MPV segment.

According to the official website, IAT-Auto is a company that "mainly engages in the development and design of automobile, engine and its power train, and their relative manufacture business."

BAW's Chinese Saab 9-5 Clone Teased (http://carscoop.blogspot.com/2010/04/baw-chinese-saab-9-5-clone-teased-in.html)
At the end of 2009, Saab, in an effort to recoup some dough back when it was a part of GM, sold BAIC (Beijing Automotive Industry Holdings Co. Ltd.) the rights to use some old models/designs. Basically, BAIC will be able to use older 9-3 and 9-5 models' designs and their respective tech.

Thanks to that deal, BAIC sub-brand Beijing Auto Works (BAW) will be debuting at least one Saab-ish model this year at the Beijing Auto Show.

This one appears to be the first new (yet aged beyond its years) Chinese-version of the outgoing Saab 9-5, code-named the C71. Anyone else for automotive "lipstick on a pig"?

BAW's Land Rover & Jeep Wrangler Lookalike SUV Models Scooped (http://carscoop.blogspot.com/2010/04/baw-land-rover-jeep-wrangler-lookalike.html)
Other debuts from the Chinese automaker include a little egg of a car and some very... Land Rover- and Jeep Wrangler-like entries into the sport-utility segment.

The smaller, electric hatchback model is called the C30 EV (somewhere a Volvo attorney just got a migraine), and it looks like a first-generation Insight-baby after a few too many Happy Meals, with a Yaris and a Fit for parents...

but you aren't kidding when you say that are complete rip-off's. They have been doing it for at least 10 years now. There are copyright laws in China but the are very general and almost never enforced.

There are other Chinese companies that actually buy the tooling rights to make some random older model from existing manufacturers.

Funny thing is that yet some other companies make copies of the copies.

Geely: 'It's not a Rolls clone' (http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle/AllCars/248837/)
The Geely GE prototype was unveiled at last year's Shanghai motor show, painted black and given pride of place on a raised plinth in the middle of Geely’s huge stand. Soon after its launch Rolls-Royce officials announced they were considering legal action.

It made obvious reference to the Rolls in the shape of its cabin, windows and down-sloping rear deck. The 'Grecian temple' grille was also considered close to being a Rolls copy, especially as it was topped by a figure which seemed to draw influence from Rolls-Royce's traditional Spirit of Ecstasy, except that the figure slopes backwards. The figure remains on the current car.

Asked about the similarities, a spokesman said: "It is our own design, from our own design studio."

Geely makes a London taxi (http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle/AllCars/248783/)
Chinese firm Geely has launched its own version of the London black cab at the month’s Beijing motor show.

Geely’s Englon TXN concept is a modern recreation of the classic TX4 black cab. The firm has released two low-quality renderings of it running through London’s streets, as well as interior pictures.

China makes a Ferrari 599 (http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle/AllCars/249068/)
The Aculein – which has more than a hint of Ferrari 599 to it – is named after the poisonous tip of a scorpion’s tail.

It uses BMW 6-series running gear given to them by the German firm and is powered by a BMW 4.8-litre V8 producing 367bhp and 361lb ft of torque. It can get from 0-62mph in just 5.2sec and go on to reach a top speed of 167mph.

Have they no shame?!

Beijing's weird and wonderful (http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle/AllCars/249065/)
First seen at the Shanghai motor show last year, the real head-turner at the show is Geely's 'Rolls-Royce' clone, known as the CA7600L. At almost six metres long, the car is bigger than a Rolls-Royce Phantom and has been facelifted for 2010; new features include a 1950s-style front grille and headlamps.

One of the other striking Western clones from the Chinese firms is CH Auto's 'Ferrari 599'; other interesting cars from the show include BYD's Lexus RX-style S6 and its Mercedes SL-style S8.

Geely's other show star is the Englon TXN concept; this is its interpretation of the iconic London black cab. Huatai has also shown off two new saloons known as B21 and B11, while one domestic firm showed off a modern-day Reliant Robin.

China's Electric Chrysler Sebring: BAIC BE071 (http://carscoop.blogspot.com/2010/05/china-electric-chrysler-sebring-baic.html)
Called the BE701, it's a Chinese-built re-faced Sebring resulting from a partnership with Chrysler. The surprising part is that a Chinese company (usually notorious for a lack of originality) made a better-looking Sebring than Chrysler, the company that actually builds the Sebring.

The electric Chinese Sebring 2.0 supposedly has a range of 200 km (124 miles), a top speed of 199km/h or 124 mph, and can hit 60mph in under 15. Motivation is sourced from an electric motor connected to a 4-speed automatic transmission.

This could have potential, as long as the necessary recharging stations are in place. In regards to the styling: if Chrysler made its Sebring this attractive (comparably), maybe it wouldn't have had to kill the nameplate.

Move Over, Nano. Make Way For The Gleagle, The World’s Cheapest Car (http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/move-over-nano-make-way-for-the-gleagle-the-world%E2%80%99s-cheapest-car/)
According to China Car Times, the Geely Gleagle IG will hit the Chinese market in 2012 in China at an MSRP of $2,250. The Tata Nano is priced from $2,700 on upwards – if you can get one. Tata still has problems making the Nano en masse, a problem unheard of at Chinese companies such as Geely. A worldwide roll-out is planned for later – as a Volvo?

It is doubtful whether the entry model of the Geely Gleagle IG will sport the gullwings. Bought as parts, one of them should set you back more than the whole car. But with the wings – could it finally be the world’s first production flying car?

Hawtai B35, Porsche Cayenne Chinese Knockoff (http://www.autoevolution.com/news/hawtai-b35-porsche-cayenne-chinese-knockoff-26517.html)
We know, we know, you're tired of reading and seeing cheap Chinese replicas of more or less successful European car models. Frankly, we're a bit tired of telling you about them too. So tired in fact we've come to look at these knockoffs from a different perspective. The Chinese perspective.

Here we have the Hawtai B35, a more or less exact copy of the Porsche Cayenne in its previous embodiment. But is it a copy? Or a replica? Or a knock-off?

First of all, the Chinese don't even say it's a Porsche, nor do they say they tried to make one. They just made a... Hawtai. Secondly, it is not a copy, unless you consider a copy the result of borrowing a few elements from the exterior design of a German luxury SUV.

Thirdly, it's not a replica, just because it doesn't share all the elements, at least at design level, with the Cayenne. As for knock-off, it certainly isn't, as it is not called Puarsche Cayene.

And, above all, it is not a Porsche Cayenne. It isn't, because it packs a tiny little 1.8l engine supplied by SAIC as the powerplant of choice for the entry level version. It is also not a Porsche Cayenne because it is a... Hyundai Santa Fe. After all, it uses the Santa Fe platform, an older one, as a basis, not the Cayenne one.
