A routine traffic stop turned into a search that included K9 units and a helicopter after nine suspected illegal immigrants fled from a passenger car police pulled over near Riggs Road and Arizona Avenue Monday night.
Det. David Ramer, a Chandler police spokesman, said police were able to catch eight of the nine men. Ramer said police did not know if the men were part of a human smuggling operation.
The incident began when an officer stopped a white Toyota Celica headed north on Arizona Avenue just before 11 p.m. As the officer got out of his cruiser, the Toyota drove another 25 feet before stopping. Nine people jumped out of the car and ran into an alfalfa field.
The officer detained three men on his own before other officers arrived, including police dogs and Mesa's helicopter unit.
Police turned the men over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials.
