View Full Version : Brake Noise

Last spring I found that I had a siezed right rear caliper on my 2001 GTS. I bought rebuilt calipers and new pads from NAPA and replaced them. I drove the car all last summer with no problems. The car sat in my garage most of the winter and wasn't driven.
A couple of weeks ago I got it out and started driving. I noticed a grinding noise comming from the right rear caliper. I checked it out and sure enough the pins were stuck. I was able to free them by just wiggling them with my fingers. There was no corrosion, they just seemed dry and the rubber boot seemed like it was holding them back from moving. So I greased them up (both sides) with NAPA Sil-Glide brake grease and put everything back together.
The problem is that I'm still hearing a griding noise comming from that right rear caliper when I apply the brakes. The car seems to stop just fine but the noise is driving me nuts. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing it or what I might be able to do to correct it?

The exact same thing happens to me (even the same corner) when i had my car sat for the whole summer. I jacked up the car and turn the wheel by my hand and found out that it only grinds at a certain session of the rotor when it touches the pad and it grinds faster and eventually like constantly when you speed up the car. The noise gets more obvious when you are next to a divider coz it just bounce back to your ear.
I suspect it's a warpped rotor caused from the brake pads constantly applying pressure from the whole summer as i had the ebrake on when i had it sat. Any thoughts?

Interresting theory slider ... Mine sat all winter in the garge with the e-brake on too. And I also notice the same sort of drag/no drag you mentioned when I spin the wheel. However....

The e-brake on this car is not part of the caliper - it's actually a seperate drum setup on the inside of the rotor. So that should mean that the e-brake couldn't really warp the rotor. I took my rotors off last night and looked at the e-brake drum and it looks good. Also, I put the rotor back on without the capliper mounted, spun the rotor, and noticed no dragging or noise from the e-brake.

Additionally, I've owned cars with warped rotors. If you have a warped rotor you'll feel and maybe hear pulsing in the system. What I'm hearing is a grinding sound - almost like there is a bunch of dirt between the pad and rotor.

I'm thinking of taking the rotors off this weekend and having them turned. There is a little bit of pitting on the surface but nothing that looks out of the ordinary. Again, I've owned cars with chewed up rotors and never heard them make noise like this, but I'm not sure what else to try at this point.

I researched on it for a lot of times and ppl always say that the noise is what we would get if we let the car sits for an extended period and it's only caused by the rotor rust. I even asked my mechanic buddy and he told me the same thing.
Half year has gone by and I am still hearing the noise. I am on the edge of buying new rotors possibly the Stoptech stage II coz my pads on the front are going, the rotors are ugly and i feel that it needs a brake fluid flush anyway.
Please do let me posted about how it went. Thank you!

OK - SO I actually replaced the rear rotors today. I bought new rotors from Advanced Auto for about $30 apiece. The noise is less now but not completley gone. I think the remaining noise is comming from the front rotors but it's hard to tell.

I'm going to have my buddy drive the car back and forth in the driveway tomorrow and I'll stand on the outside and listen. Maybe I'll get a better idea of where it's commng from. I drove my wife's 2007 Vibe (Toyota matrix) today and payed attention to the brake noise. It's not silent when I brake with it, but it's not as loud as the Celica. I may just be hearing things or being a little too picky about this...

I've got the same exact grinding at the same place, the rear passenger side, which all you guys have experienced. Has anyone found out a good way to solve this problem?
