View Full Version : Replace Hub Studs

Hi all.
Last night I was going to take off my stock wheel and throw my new wheels on. The lugs were all corroded and stuck to the studs, so now my studs are no good. I think I have about 3 good studs all the way around my car.
Long story short, can I buy and replace my own studs, or do I need to replace the entire hub? Also, what size and where do I buy replacement studs?
I appreciate the help.
Thanks,
Tyler

Same thing happened to me--I messed up one of the studs trying to open a stuck nut. I was quoted ~$35 to repair it at a local shop (haven't taken it in yet though...). As far as I know, they would just replace the messed up lugs (they shouldn't cost more than ~$10 at auto parts stores).

Wheels studs are cheap anywhere but the dealership where they're usually marked up 1000% (not a joke). they're also not too difficult to replace although it's about a million times faster with a lift.

Yea I just got a quote for at least $350 for only labor for 10 studs. I'll be doing them myself this weekend.
Anyone have the appropriate dimensions I'll need? Or should I just suck it up and buy them from the stealer?

Somebody's selling 5mm ichiba spacers in the classifieds. They come with slightly extended studs.

Is there anyway to buy some 5x114 hubs for a conversion?

It's quite easy if you have access to a hydraulic press. One of my buddy's just had some extended studs pressed onto his hubs to match his lightweight extended lug nuts.

took my mechanic 4 hours to replace all my studs..... not as simple as I thought it would be....

i've done it twice now. pretty easy to do but rears are abit more work. also i did it without a lift just one side at a time. i needed extended (due to thicker brakes/5mmspacer/thicker wheels) ended up paying a bit much for ARP. there are none listed for the celica nor with out exact knurl(sp) diameter but i used the Lexus IS spec ones and they fit great.

can you give me the measurements/pitch and whatever else i need to buy the right bolts? i need the same specs but just shorter bolts because they're pushing out my wheels.

12x1.5 with ... crap i forgot the knurl diameter and thats the most imporant part. if you find the spec on the is300 one its the same

so do you hammer them in? or they screw in?
I have an extra rear hub that the bearing busted, I was gonna salvage the Studs... I need to know how they come out because it looks like they are really in there

they are just jammed in there. put the hub in a vice, get a large hammer and go at it ;) but dont damage them. then when you put them in your hub put it in, hammer it in then if u have a spare open ended lug use that with a torque wrench or breaker bar and jam that down to pull the stud all the way into the hub

i think the stock studs are 40mm long (12x1.5).

that doesnt matter really, its the diameter of the ribbed collar that goes into the actual hub

i've only had to replace one in the front but here's what I can add.
I spent like .59 cents on a new stud from Advance Auto, plus another .40 cents on two nuts.
Pop the old one out with a punch and put the new one in. It's a bit difficult to get it in there but once you have it started make sure you line up the ridges on the outside so it will fall into the notch on the backside of the hub. You can then put on both the nuts and start tightening. Eventually you'll put enough pressure on the front side that it locks the rear of the stud into place.
took me about 30-45 mins, no lift or air tools.
