I'm also thinking about getting new rims and very concerned about tire sizes these days.
For 17x7 rim size, the tire size that best matches stock tire diameter is 205/45. It's just a bit larger than stock (616 mm vs. 611 mm), but not enough to affect acceleration, speedo readings or fuel consumption (well, I guess so). I would like to get this tire size myself.
The only problem is that it is not a very popular size at least here in Europe. I've asked to some distributors and it is available in Dunlop, Michelin and Pirelli. Pretty expensive also. Anyway, I've discovered that the Civic Type R has this size Potenzas RE040 from stock so Bridgestone should have this size available.
205/40 R17 instead is soooo popular... but makes the wheel 595 mm diameter, which in my opinion is very small and would do wrong to the car looks, as there would be more empty space between the tire and the fender.
215/45 R17 is nice size also. Bigger profile, bigger diameter than stock, could affect consumption, accel, speedo, but fills the fender OK (I guess). Not sure if it can fit a 7" wide rim!!!
I'm getting real mad with SO MANY different choices possible...
