Is this a good habit or something, I usually go from 1st to 3rd to 5th .... or 1st to 4th at 23 mph, it makes it smoother. Honestly ever since i had the celica GT-S i never used all the gears in regular driving. Only when burning up the streets.

hmmm1st to 4th i dunno. If i do it, its only from 4th to 6th when i take 4th to a 100mph. I can see 1st to 3rd if you redline, but 1st to 4th seems like you would be bogging your engine some what which i know isn't good.

I do try the 1 to 2nd gear .... but i cant do it so there is no slump ... i do better 1 to 3. 1 and 2 are like the same damn thing lol vrrrrrrrr (shift) VVVRRRR like ... it is very easy to start in 2nd.
Like oe of the car mags say ..... it feels like it should have 7 gears. Soo true

Usually I go 1-2-3-5 all before I hit 40mph

If I'm hauling ass thru 1st to 2nd and drag 2nd to redline which is about 60 something mph and I don't wanna get pulled over I pop it over into 5th...
if I'm in lift in 3rd hauling ass up to 80 I pop it into 6th when I'm done playing...
IS this bad?

I don't skip gears.

skipping gears wont do anything bad as long as your RPM number isnt drasticly different from where it will be when the tranny is engaged.... IE:

if the flywheel is spinning (imaginary numbers here...) 1000 rpm and the tranny is spinning 1000 rpm, its going to go smooth and cause no damage. so how does it matter how the tranny gets up to the 1000 rpm?

laymans: it wont matter as long as the engagement speed is correct for the RPM your flywheel is turning.

i usually get started in 1st, go into 2nd strong then pop it over to 4th gear once I hit 40ish.

Bogging (giving it full or near full throttle below 3k) is bad if you're trying to accelerate. Bad on the main bearings, especially for a low-tourqe motor like ours. I commonly shift from 1st to 4th. I'll take 1st up to right before lift (6k) and shift to 4th and land about 2k, but not if I need to continue to accelerate, or if I'm heading up an incline. If you skip-shift right, it will save your sychros in the long run, just because they haven't been used as much. As a rule, just don't give the car full throttle below 3k and you won't hurt our little torqe-mizers! Of course, a forced induction 4-banger produces a lot more torqe at low rpms with more stress on the crank, but they're made to handle it, ours are not. If you really want to screw our engines up, try 'spraying' below 3k. That will really chew the main bearings up.

i dont skip gear that often, but the few times when i do, its... 1st, 2nd, 3rd, to 6th, but thats only if im pushing the car. 90% of the time, i just shift the gears normal...

I don't usually skip gears but sometimes I'll do 1-3, or 2-4. Or punching it 1st to redline then 4th when rpm drops to 3000-4000. And same goes for punching it in 2nd, hitting redline, then shifting to 6th.

why would you skip gears... if you're trying to brake then using the engine in addition to the brakes can keep the drivetrain loaded while you're braking causes the engine to turn off the wheels.. engine braking.. while not good at very high rpm if done in the right range and speed as you downshift it can create solid deceleration in the car.

only time i skip gears is when i'm doing super emergency braking in which i just dont have the time... in that case its basically left foot clutch right foot brakes and brain smacking against my forehead.

im talkin about upshifting. i can smoothly do a 1 to 3 to 5 and maintain that easy calm flow of driving without boging.

good think i did a search before i posted this same question.

I don't think anyone really answered Brak's question directly about making it a habit. They just say bogging is bad and that it may expand the life of your syncros (which is essentially is a yes). And since this was posted last year, i'd like to get a re-evaluated yes.

I just need a simple yes or no;
will skipping gears, (1 ,3 ,5 ) be an ok habit?

How is it harmful to the car? I skip gears all the time if I won't bog by doing it.

But BRAK's question was answered!

"who else skips gears here when driving?" Some people did. Do we need anymore closure on it? The second point brought up was is bogging bad.

Really, now that I think about it, you could really just skip 1st altogether and start in second or third, I've done it before...you have to rev like hell and slip the clutch really slowly, but it can be done.

hmm, THAT sounds good for the tranny:gap:

dude the ****ing service manager at toyota test driving my celica started it in 2nd gear ALL THE ****ING TIME... I blew up on him during a test drive for my 2nd gear syncro problems....

I am like, "How are you going to notice the problem if you don't even shift from 1st to 2nd gear."

Skipping gears is fine. It will do no damage as long as you shift INTO a safe rpm range. I typically shift up 1-2-3-5 or 1-2-4 in traffic with no bogging. I doing usually downshift so that I land BELOW lift, not in it. Downshifting 5-3-2 or 6-4-2 for corners to engine brake is OK as long as the rpm range is OK. Just got to use your head.

Someone stated above, keeping load on the engine around corners is more safe. This is very true at normal and above normal speeds. For most corners you should brake before the corner and then accelerate thru the corner. Gives more control.

I usually do 1-2-4 or 1-2-3-5, but thats onlyh when i go to liek 4-5k in 2nd or 3rd, then i skip a gear, and wait for the RPMs to drop down to where they would be at that speed in the gear I am skipping to. That way, it doesnt jerk or mess up the gears too badly. You just have to time it right. Similar concept to rev matching, except letting it fall to the right rev.
