Fanboys, begin weeping... now.

http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/28/subaru-rwd-coupe-will-be-sold-worldwide-toyota-version-only-in/

Inside Line is reporting that the new, RWD coupe being developed by Subaru and Toyota will only be sold as a Subaru in markets outside of Japan, while the Toyota version will remain exclusive to the Land of the Rising Sun. The report goes on to say that the coupe will be based off the Subaru Impreza (despite Toyota/Subaru's own press release saying that it's an "all-new" platform) and that power will be provided by a naturally aspirated, 2.0-liter boxer engine producing 220 hp at 6,500 rpm.

Toyota and Subaru are using the Integra Type-R as the performance benchmark for the new coupe, with a 103-inch wheelbase, a 2+2 seating layout and a curb weight of 2,866 pounds. As reported before, the coupe will debut in 2011 and pricing is expected to begin just south of $20,000.

Looks like the only option will be the Subi version. I'm a little bummed, but I can live with it -- looks to be a badass car

Its just going to be like the STI/EVO scence, mostly 16 yr old drivers.

I own an Evo, many of my friends own STis and none of us are anywhere close to 16. Sure STi/Evo drivers can be asshats but be accurate, I have been to dozens of Subaru and Mitsubishi events and races and have still never met this mythical 16 year old STi/Evo driver.

Also the insurance for a 16 year old driving an Evo would easily be more than the car payment.

I need concrete proof, it's still a rendering. But I'm mildly interested :D

way to use an 8 year old car as your benchmark.

I think they are actually using the RSX-S (a.k.a the current Integra in Japan) so yeah, way to use a 6 year old car as benchmark.

I'm just disapointed that the Toyota variant won't be sold here... seems kind of silly, but I guess Toyota (probably accurately) projected that sales wouldn't justify the cost of bringing it over, espeically when essentially the same car would be sold with the Subi badge :(

See my post in the "All other models" section covering this:

I'm gonna wait and see how the Toyota version looks. Living on a small island has it's advantages: we can import directly from Japan without worries.

maybe you can do a badge swap pretty easy like GMC sierra and the chevy silverado

That would be like badging a Camaro as a Firebird... :thumbdown

Sounds more & more like it is just a means to put a 2dr. back into Subaru's line-up. Which would make it a new Impreza RS. What Toyota does will probably depend on what it does w/the tC. Toyota/Scion currently has the Yaris, tC, and Solara as 2drs. Obviously, the "love child" would internally compete against the tC (& probably win in most categories).

I suspect that the next "sports" minded Toyota badged product we'll see in the US will be something along the lines of a junior FT-HS. Toyota is going hybrid big and a comparably inexpensive sports hybrid would only brighten that image. Maybe even something like an all electric (or Hybrid) MR-2 to compete against the Tesla? Lol. Who knows? It's all speculation at this point. If the petroleum issues remain... its going to be a whole new automobile landscape.

Subaru makes such ugly cars...

Can't they just make a competitive re-hash of the celica and not suck at marketing it? :(
