Finally.....took a few nights and an afternoon to finish. Given the obsticles of a burnt out soldering iron and paint that didn't want to stick to the needles, i think it came out pretty well.

Here are a few 'in process' pics

And the final product

http://www.clonegts.com/Photos/DSC01000.JPG

For some reason I didn't get a pic with the needles blue during the day. I'll get one and post it up.

Thanks to TheHammer for the amazing fast service and sweet instructions for the LED install. There were some sweaty palms at first, but once you get to rolling, there were LEDs flying all over the place.

how much do soldering iron's cost... I might just do it myself if it isn't too hard
I am about to move so I haven't really checked in the area of shops that will do it...
kind of putting off mods until I move... :( alot of preorders and holds lol

10-20 dollars at radio shack... just find a thin tip iron it'll save you lots of hassles with mistaken pin identity and desoldering the wrong thing.

Nice, I just did the window switch tonight on my car. I'm waiting to test it out on Static's car to make sure I did it right before ripping into the other ones.

And you may have beat me but you will not have custom reverse indiglos ;)

Beautiful, I wish I could do something like that, but no money and bad at soldering. Nevertheless, great job.

Where did you get your gauge.. I want exactly like that one...
One that has AC on it.. There are few out there it seems and that is the only one that I like.....
How much did you get it for??

Do you really need to change out the LED on the gauge of the speed and rpm part??
Doesn't the reverse indiglow makes it blue anways??

Thanks for the props guys.

I got the gauges from good ole coOOlcelica. Give him a PM on price and availability.

If you don't change the needle LEDs, you'll have orange light coming thru your needles.

clone,

i also ordered the blue leds from hammer... that import intelligence kit has pissed me off enuff where i can barely see anything during the day

i just have a couples questions for u

what wattage soldering iron do you need

i know there is 15 watt up to 40 watt... id assume a smaller 15 watt one would suffice..

and you said we should buy a smaller tip for it?

thanks

~Eddie

p.s. i should be doing this mod very soon

Use the 15 watt one from Radio Shack. Its cheap and it has a nice small tip. Plus it won't get quite as hot.

Looks awesome Clone, glad you made it out ok after your soldering iron debacle. One thing you might want to do though, is modify the indiglos like I did as can be seen here:

Thanks again, and enjoy your newfound look....

hey is it possible to make the turn signals blue too....or does this gauge run off of the old face gauge(like how the import intelligence gauge does)?

06-18-2002, 10:51 AM
got a qustion for you people, how would gauges like clone has, change the led's for the gas/temp to blue and put on and change(led's) the needles on the speedo/tach to red. just a thought but i don't want it to look dumb. i will keep the gauges set to blue also.

TheHammer
06-18-2002, 10:56 AM
A few people have ordered that very same thing, red needles and blue gas/temp lcd. It gives it the euro look like the VW's. I think it looks pretty good myself.

Also, the turn singals are 2 bulbs behind the stock gauges, which have a green filter built into the gauges to give it a green look. The reason they did this is to make them as bright as possible so that you can see them during the day. You can actually take a blue marker to the gauges and have blue turn signals, but, they tend to be dim with the blue marker on there. Just food for thought.

Chaos007
06-18-2002, 11:52 AM
damn they all look good. kind of hard to see w/o the indiglos though.

I used a 30W from Radio Shack. Like $10. It worked great. It's made for applications like this, so it isn't too hot or anything.

Used rubbing alcohol and a few Q-Tips to rub the needles clean, then used a blue metallic paint on em. The paint is only on the backside....so don't paint the whole thing.

I have to get a buddy to pace me so I can reset the needles. My tach is reading about 500 RPM too high (lift hits at 6500 now) and it sure feels like I'm going faster than the indicated speed.

To calibrate the RPM...
Let the car idle at like 700-800 where your's idles...
Then use the masking tape to mark the needle.... to be precide tape the tip of the needle end to end or side by side... since the needle is like 1/8" thick..
Then do your thing... when you are finished let you car idle and put the needle back on between the masking tape...

Either that or GTS's just hit lift a few times and tweak it.

Still need to get the speedo right.

Dammit! I tried this install today & could only get six of the LCD led's to work. I used a much higher wattage(100w) soldering pen/iron. I burned up a few led's and now I'm gonna have to order more to do the needles. I'm so pissed at myself! I'm going to radio shack tomorrow morning to get the one you used Clone. Yours look so great, Clone. I'm soooooo jealous. hehehe

He visto vuestros trabajo de cambiar el color del marcador y me ha gustado mucho.
Tengo una duda, los leds que lleva me podeis decir de que di

Well, I know what you are asking....but I just don't know my Spanish well enough to write back to ya.

Someone tell him to get the LEDs from Hammer over at www.teamcelica.com. Don't worry about figuring out the size yourself....it's a bitch. Just buy his....it's much easier.

And then something about the blue color of the needles I think...not sure about the ?

Sorry bro....

Hey dude! I really love your stock gauages and the way you made them like that! May I ask, how the heck did you get the orange out? I would love to do it your way because I'm from Canada and we have guages in Kms. . . the indiglos are all in MPH so it doesn't work out very well for us. I rather use the stock gauges but want the exact look like yours. Please tell me how you did it. . thanks.

Dude, I don't think that just putting on BLUE LEDs will change the color as the guage has orange paint on it. Somehow you have to remove the oranage in order for the blue to show. I'm sure of that.

Naw, I don't think so. Email Hammer about it @ TheHammer@teamcelica.com and ask him. He'll know since you're not getting a response from this guy.

And thank you ladies.....I aim to please :naughty:

You are correct, the blue led's will not light up the orange lettering too well, the pics from before depict if you rub off the orange paint on the back of the stock gauges... They'll light up, but, not like you want unless you take off the orange paint, and that will take a little while to do, as well as a lot of patience....

Jesse IL
07-24-2002, 07:46 AM
The gauges are made of several layers. The orange is actually on the second layer (from the top). it is under the matte finish layer. You COULD get it off, but you would completely screw up the top layer of the gauges. Custom gauges are the only solution.
