3rd will pop out on slow acceleration, say 25-45mph; also wont pop into gear on occasion, get a little more forceful with the shift and you feel it pop in. since it will drop into gear, but then pops itself out as i let off the clutch, i've been avoiding 3rd as much as possible, so i'm not sure how much it is really doing it. oh yeah, lift in 3rd is a no-no too, pops out on the changeover. i had a nasty whine in 2nd for a day or two as well, but that seems to have went away. when it pops out, it's not going all the way to neutral, it will sit there still tilted in the gear but 'bouncing' off the gears.
i know it's going in for service and warranty work, i'd just like to know what i screwed up. i've heard of difficulty selecting gears and grinding, but not actually going into gear and starting to accelerate, then popping out of gear while the clutch is completely disengaged.
the bad part is, the problems only show when i'm going easy on the car. lift in 1st and 2nd is fine and if u land 3rd in lift you're fine. i must admit though, the transmission held up longer than i expected after all the horror stories.

lol... your tranny is warranteed for 60 months or 60,000 miles... take advantage of that horror stories or not and take it to the dealer.... you probably have either badly worn synchros or completely ground dog teeth thingies... did you powershift a lot on the tranny?

hmmm, your the first that I have heard of so far that has had this particular problem with the transmition.
Possable problems could be a worn bearing, gear, gear shift fork, or a damaged locking ball spring. One of thoes are probably causing yoru problem. I would guess that it's not a gear shift fork because there are three in the transmition, and if one went you would probably have difficulties with more than just one gear. I would bet against a worn gear because the gears themselves are pretty tough, but any thing is possable, it could have been defective. Really, there is no way of knowing without taking the transmition apart. I hope that the warrenty work goes smoothly for you, let us know what was wrong with it. ;)

i powershifted once maybe twice, no more tho, even then it wasnt like i was bouncing at 8300, maybe 7k. i've had the 1-2 grind at high rpm ever since i got the car, so i'm kinda anxious to see what she feels like with good synchros, assuming everything goes ok.
i finally got rid of my cricket orgy/belt tensioner problem and now this. i have had 50k troublefree miles though, with the exception of the former cricket orgy. i am still under 60k so it shouldn't be a problem getting it covered under warranty. now the hassle of getting a rental car at 20 years of age.

I have the same problem with my car but its the 6th gear popping back to neutral when i let go of the clutch. Dealer told me some locking spring were not in place right. This happened after they replaced my tranny to a wide gate.
go take it to the dealer. it should be under warranty.

Most dealers provide a renatl car if the repair will take over 1 day and it is warranty work. In fact, I /think/ that is part of the toyota warranty. Talk to your dealer before you call car rental companies.

the car now has approx. 51k.
i know they should provide me with a rental car, problem is you must be 21 to sign for a rental car in Indiana. Oh well, maybe mom will give up the Vette for a week or so :)

Yeah sometimes my 1st gear will pop out when I goto shift to second. It will never disengage on its on. usually I will have my hand on the shifter and will give it very little force with the clutch in and it will just kinda 'pop' on out and downwards I take it. Really doesn't happen much.
