Hey everyone! New guy here. Looking to to gain some knowledge on this car since my gf owns one. She has an 01' w/227K miles on it! Brakes are shot, head makes a ticking sound (it's not a bearing), and is way underpowered. I'm really surprised it is still running. I guess Celicas can take a beating!

Edit: underpowered meaning that I don't think the engine is making the power it is supposed to be making....

you have the wrong out look.

stock brake pads are known to last 80-100k miles and the ticking is normal it is the vvti.
and any car is goin to have some issues at 227k miles.

is it a gt or gts?

No... I'm saying that w/that many miles and the problems that it has: it's a good car. It's a GT and the ticking is not normal. My S2k has normal ticking w/it as well. The ticking on my gf's car sounds like lifters.. gets louder as you rev.. not a deep tap like a spun rod bearing.

Maybe I should edit my 1st post since it is getting misunderstood.... Very minute problems for a car w/that many miles..

I think my statement about "underpowered" is misunderstood. My gf's celica is underpowered meaning that I think it needs a compression ck. Not that I think it's a slow car. I found the DIY compression thread. I am in no way bashing this car. lol

With the ticking getting louder as you rev the engine it might be the intake cam gear. There was a guy that posted a vid of his ticking motor a few ppl thought it might be that. His motor did the same as your explaining. It also probably needs a serious tune up with having 225K on it.

i would do a compression and leakdown test on it and maybe posted up a video of the ticking. im gonna stick with my first assumption that it is normal vvti noise, my gts is kind of clickety too.
and im gonna bet its not you lifters either since the celica is a DOHC engine

I saw that thread the other day, but didn't have time to watch the video. I'll go take a look at it. Thanks for the info!

I'll start a thread and post up a video then and let you more knowledgable guys diagnose it.
