View Full Version : best synthetic oil?

okay. I read in a thread somewhere here that you should change the oil of your car after the first 1500 miles? Is this true? Right now I've got 800 miles on my car and the break-in is going well. I just want to keep my engine alive as long as possible.

Also, I want to use synthetic oil, but I'm not sure what the best kind to use is. I'd imagine its Mobile 1, but I could be wrong.

Thanks!

Wait until about 5000 miles, then go synthetic.

It is usually a good idea to change oil at 1000-1500 miles. You can go with synthetic then if you want... or you can wait... it's really up to you.

Consider Amsoil too.. It is an excellent oil too...

Castrol isn't even a true synthetic oil. It's a shame Mobil lost that case against them. Now you can call dog poo in a bottle synthetic oil...

Neither is Mobil 1, anymore (going back to the Tri-synthetic days)

Mobil Delvac 1 is their only SAE-grade motor oil that is still a full PAO base stock.

Royal Purple is the best. Adds Horsepower. :naughty: They said u will notice the difference. I havent used it yet cuz i heard that once you go synthetic you cant go back to regular motor oil.

That's insane, I'd have to change my oil every 2 weeks then. Bad enough I have to get an oil change every 3000 miles (every 2 months for me). The Lancer EVO recommends oil changes at 5000 miles, and it's shipped with full synthetic and can only use full synthetic or you void the warranty. I think the idea of using synthetic is that it lasts longer than conventional oil, and the oil doesn't break down in very high performance/pushed hard engines.

Celica Detective, I think you misunderstood the post. The recommendation is to change the oil, "initially", after the first 1000-1500 miles. That clears the engine of the loose metal fragments that are typically worn off in the first stages of break-in. After that, 3000-5000 (everyone has a preference) is the typical interval.

im running mobil1 supersyn right now with a oem toyota filter... i usually changed my oil every 3k miles with the regular conventional oil but this will be my first oil change since ive changed to synthetic... do i still have to change my oil at 3k mile or can i change it a little bit later on like at 5k?? synthetic should last longer then conventional right??

I changed my oil at 1500 miles and used Mobil 1 5W-30 and a Fram X2 oil filter. My car used to take 2 to 3 minutes to idle down to 700-800 rpms, now it only takes about 40 seconds. I recommend Mobil 1 oil with factory weight. As for the filter i recommend either the Fram X2 with 98% efficiency or TRD sport filter with the same efficiency but its about $10 more.

Don't believe the hype about changing oil every 5,000 miles.I've talked with experienced mechanics and they unanimously agree that it is still wise to change every 3k miles.Engine wear is still engine wear.I know one mechanic who owns several cars with over 100,000 miles on each and every one of them.He has had no trouble with the engines. He attributes the long life to the 3k oil change. When he hit the 9k mark,he recommends using Castrol synth and still changes oil at 3k.It seems redundant and tedious, but your engine is worth it.THe "extra" that you spend on oil and oil filters is a small price to pay compared to replacing an engine.I plan on keeping my Celica for a long time and regular oil changes are the life blood of your power plant.

Changing you oil every 3k with synthetic oil is just stupidity period. Mobil 1 can go 5k with absolutely no added engine wear and Amsoil can go up to 35k with less engine wear than coventional oil with 3k. Don't fall into that Jiffy lube hype. Oil analysis doesn't lie. Blackstone labs will give you an incredible breakdown of your oil including what metals are in it and where they came from. www.maxima.org has a huge spreadsheet database that proves extended drain intervals are attainable even for people that race often.

Sure that's ok. It's kinda like throwing a whole loaf of bread away after pulling out 2 slices.

i change my oil every 1,800 with mobil 1 synthetic, and i dont care what anybody says, you due that and your engine, will last for ever. This one kid has an Ls integra with force induction with 280,000 mile and his engine is still fine, because he changes the oil like me. ( he is also only running 7 psi )

Ok, I had a Honda Civic with that many miles and I changed the oil every 25-30k and had the engine torn down to see the damage. No damage at all, looked almost new. Amsoil has independent proof that the oil lasts that long. Don't waste your money on 3k oil changes unless you have forced induction in which case 5k oil changes are fine no matter how hard you run your car.
