There's a lot of stop-and-go traffic in Hong Kong. So my question is, how can I start the Celica most smoothly ? I have no problem driving a stick but I hope I can start the car smooth like an automatic. I usually raise the clutch halfway first, step on gas throttle, and release the clutch. Sometimes it's a very smooth start; sometimes it isn't. You know that's always a little difference feeling the clutch.
Also the footwork. I use the ball of my feet to step on brakes and clutch. I hear that to 'feel' the throttle better one should use his toes to step on it, with the heel being the pivot. Is that true and is there anyone doing it ?

it takes practice with any manual transmission car. some are nto smooth inherently by design. others seem to glide through gear changes. its all in how you slip the clutch and apply gas.
you'll get it eventually.

When in doubt, just ride the clutch (keep the clutch a half-inch in until the car is moving smoothly before releasing it).
On your second question, I think you're trying to apply 'heel and toe' technique to daily driving, which isn't necessary at all. When you start to get into sportive driving techniques you can ask about this again, but for now forget everything you've heard. Just use your foot period. True most ppl use the toes of their feet to operate the pedals, but don't worry about any pivot points. Push and go, push and go.

Put in second gear and put a tad bit more gas to it like your in first gear. That's should do it.

The sad fact is, in Hong kong this generation of Celica isn't popular at all. Everybody says it looks beautiful, but it just doesn't sell well.
Reasons:
1. The sole agent (Toyota dealer) sells it HK$300,000. (roughly US$ 38560) For those imported used ones, it's around HK$ 20,0000. (Very low mileage -- about 10000 km) The sole agent aims to promote the company's image instead of marketing the Celica. They sell 200 Corollas' and Camrys' but not one Celica.
2. Expensive insurance for coupes.
3. Honda Type R series. Civic Type R, Integra Type R and Accord
Euro R (or Accord Type R) just dominates the market. A lof of
people thinks Celica is no rival to Type R.
4. Altezza (Lexus IS 200) sells.
You guys rightly point out that in the 70s' and 80s', Celica is very
popular in here.
