Speaking with Autoblog, Mazda's PR man Jeremy Barnes made it clear that the automaker has no plans to offer a Mazdaspeed version of the current MX-5. While it was originally assumed that the turbocharged 2.3-liter four-pot found in the Mazdaspeed3 would eventually find its way under the hood of the MX-5, Mazda discovered that the swap wasn't a bolt-in affair. According to Barnes, "It does theoretically fit, until you bolt on the head." A high-pressure fuel pump on the back of the head, driven off the cam, would necessitate a notch in the firewall. As such, converting the engine from a transverse (FWD) to a longitudinal (RWD) layout just wasn't feasible.

the new mx-5 would definately be more fun to drive if it had the ms3 motor. it would be great if mazdaspeed just made a bolt on turbocharger for the mx-5's current motor. the stock mx-5 right now still makes just under what the old mazdaspeed mx-5 put out as far as hp.

the current Miata is as close to perfect as a car can get - I don't think it needs a lick more power.

Plus you can already get the MS-R package if your pockets are deep enough, and still qualify for stock (showroom b for road race or c-stock for autocross) racing categories.

never heard of that
my dad owns a 2007 mx-5 with PRHT and suspension package. i think thats as best as it gets for performance option packages.

i was going to make some smartass remark to this but on second thought i came up with this.

you tell me why the miata is a perfect car. and i will show you one that is better in every way. maybe not as cheap but all around better none the less. i mean you do have to pay to play.

and please don't take this as a bash to miata's, i'll give credit where credit is due. i just don't think it deserves too much.

he means its perfect as it is. well balanced in all aspects. your misunderstanding his statement.
it is an mx-5s are awesome cars. they deserve plenty of respect.

there are barely any other cars you can compare them to within the price range.
saturn sky?
honda s2000? no 35k starting vs 21k?
bmw z4? dont even care to look up how much that is.
if you were to compare it to anything it would have to be roadsters.
and come on, what other cheap roadsters can you get a power retractable hard top that doesn't kill trunk space. none.

basically the MS-R package is the factory racer package of MazdaSpeed goodies, like the Solstice Z0k package.

sky/solstice are about as good performers but nowhere near as user friendly

s2000 is hands down a ****ing amazing little machine, I love it to death but as you said, the price kind of kills it when compared to the Miata

the Z4 is a solid tourer/daily driver - I owned one for 2 years and I really enjoyed it but its not as much fun as an S2000 or Miata due to the engineered understeer. The S2K was my first choice.

The fact is for the price they are amazing. Hell, you could get a used one for 6 grand now.

And to add a twist to that: " Perfection is not when you have added everything that you can, rather when there's nothing else to take away." (Paraphrased from architect Mies van der Rohe, minimalist, less is more.) The Miata comes surprisingly close to that.

Yea I'm looking into getting a 2 seater convertible and the s2k has come down to a reasonable 14-16k for a decent one, but I could get a 2nd gen miata for 8 so I'm def. considering that now. The firs gen is just slightly too.... well gay... for me to have as a dd.

I don't think Mazda NEEDS to bring out a MS Miata. Should bring back the club-spec model though.

a good handling car doesn't need to run high 14's.....I don't think it's handling is an excuse for that in this day and age, but w/e

compromise between price, fuel economy and performance - that's kind of what makes the Miata so much fun.

You can plunk down $20,000 and be competitive with $50,000 sports cars on the weekend, while getting 30 mpg during the week.

Give it a V6 or the MS3 turbo and I'll start caring.

a heavy v6 in a miata? It's pretty obvious you have no idea what makes a miata so awesome...

Add a turbo, intercooler piping, the intercooler, downpipe, etc...

And what do you get?!?!? More added weight to the front end too??? Nawwwww......

Some people will never get it, which means they won't be in the market for these cars, which means more fun for us!

To me, the best Miata ever is the 1.6L with 115 hp.
