View Full Version : The pain of an AUTOMATIC transmission

I own a 2002 GT. It has the action package on it, but there is a slight problem...it's an automatic. I've seen Celica's with a turbo installed, and I've even seen an auto with a turbo...What else can be done other than intakes and exhaust to help? Anyone got any helpful hints?

i feel your pain...I'm in a 2002 GT auto... the worst is when people say "Nice car, i bet its pretty quick, its manual right?" then u just have to bow your head and let out a little tear LOL :)

That's what's said to me...but I tend to take my car to the limit anyway...and STILL show it's got some speed.

Taking automatics to the limit = kiss your tranny goodbye. "hmmm, how come my car won't shift into park anymore?"

Hint to anyone considering purchase of a Celica: Take the 2 days and learn how to drive stick. It takes practice, but you'll never go back to automatic after that.

I KNOW how to drive a manual. I didn't CHOOSE an automatic...It was a lack of options. You know NINTENDO generation..."I want it, and I want it now."

haha every time i drive automatic it feels like the car is not in my control like when i let off the gas it still moves forward instead of slowling down. but also its so laidback.. its like a someone is driving for you. lol cuz u dont have to do anything. gas brake gas brake gas

i learned m/t... i still like my car better..... well.. learned m/t on a really old car.. probablynot a good comparison.. but where i live... auto is much easier to live with... and for speed.... i've gone out looking for races... its hard to get one.... 2 laner street... stopped on red.... both in front of lanes. even if i wanted to, its hard finding a street race... and what other reason is there to get a m/t than to be faster? (dont say gas cuz GT auto gets better mileage than the m/t) haha i have to defend the GT autos when i see stuff like this.... happens about once every 3 months or so... not like u care or anything... and now im rambling again. im out

Devers_GT

It all depends on what you are looking for. True a m/t will be quicker off the line, but in the end. THEY ARE THE SAME CAR! An a/t and a m/t 2002 GT( or GT-S) have the SAME engine...so in the end...they'll top out at the same spot. I'm just looking for ideas to help out with an a/t...

kuno

again, get n20.. you'll get consistant shifts :)

Devers_GT

Okay...kuno...what is n20??

FriedRice

he's talking about nitrous..... IMO forget it.... also... for clarification, the carss dont top out at same spot... gearing is different .. theres a big difference between transmissions...

if u wanna go fast... u should have gotten a m/t... u can pour in 3 large in an auto gt and in the end still be slower than a slightly modded gts.... u would be better off trading in for a used one....

and if u want a lil extra power.. intake, header, exhaust, weight reduction.

level ten torque converter should be good too.. but havent seen anyone who has it on these boards.... dont know if theres a difference...

good luck man and happy modding.

Damn it!!! I've seen alot of auto owners complaining how to race an auto, what's the quarter mile, how to make an auto's fast and not even one have step up to make the ultimate mod. I'm an auto owner too and I always suggest if u want to race ur auto or make ur auto go faster, then upgrade ur Torque Converter and get a Level 10, so far nobody has done this. I've seen some results of a Level 10 on a 2001 automatic Eclipse and so far, there is a big difference compared to stock and with a Level 10 torque converter. If only I got some $$ I would get it but I'm tied up because of my bills.

C'mon auto owners, some of you could afford to buy a $1000+ Body Kit, why can't one of you guys get this Torque Converter and let's see if it has improvements to our auto Celi's. Someone needs to stand up.

Funny you would say that. That's my next mod. And there are a few auto owners on this board that has done this on this board.

If you're looking for straight line speed, you got the wrong car.

GT-S auto here also, got it because I bought the car for my wife as Valentine's gift and she can't and wont drive stick(too jerky) , she gets car sick real fast. I hate it when I have to drive it and some fool in a civic revs on me. I know that if i had a stick I could destroy that foo.

slighty off topic but still related to automatics

I have a '77 vette that i bought a few years ago.
100% stock. 350cubic inches. 180hp(dog) L48 motor.
350TH Auto tranny with 3.08's in the rear.
Great looker. Kinda lackluster.
SO my first mission was power. Took that L48 out and dumped a zz4 Gm Crate Motor in there. Thats good for 355hp / 405tq.
WoW what a difference.
But the big difference didnt come till i got a TQ converter.
I went with a modest 3000rpm stall B&M unit. I was able to power break higher and launch a lot harder/faster.
Next mod is to get those damn 3.08's outta the rear. LoL

The best mod for you auto guys will be a TQ converter.
Hands Down. Be sure to have a tranny oil cooler installed as well.
I dunno if LVL10 does thsi for ya or not. But i noticed much higher tranny temps after the higher stall converter was added. SO i pipped my own tranny fluid kewler inline and mounted it towards the front of my radiator.

The car is laid up right now cause one of the tranny lines after 20+ years up rubbing on the frame and being exposed to the elements rusted/rubbed its way into a leak.
AS soon as she is kicking again ill wash her up and post some pics
:)

Then why don't you go over to this thread in the Newbie forum and set these guys straight that an auto can't be as fast as a manual with the same mods. They are living in some sort of fantasy land...

Anybody know where I can get a level 10 TQ converter and how much they are? I would totally be interested.

And I am sick of this auto/manual debate, who the hell cares. However, I do have a question, how hard is it for you m/t people to walk after sitting in traffic for an hour with your leg suspended in the air?

In a manual Celica there is a place to rest your foot so its not "suspended in the air". Thats where my foot rests so when I get out I walk just fine!

TC is about $400

look through the forced induction forum. a guy was able to get ahold of them and the torque converter was only about 400 bucks - which is not bad. but you have to send your torque converter to them. i too have an auto, let alone a gt. i love her and hate her, but i wouldn't trade her in ever. next car just has to break 300 hp at least..last statement is pretty funny though :D

You have a nice car. It's not a race car. Concentrate on the good looks, the handling, and the great gas milage. Why bother obsessing about what your car sucks at?

It's like having a hot girlfriend that cooks and cleans, but all you can complain about is how small her boobs are.

FriedRice
06-22-2002, 08:35 PM
yep... good analogy... boobs=speed. wonderful.

seriously. if u think about it... this car is a glorified corolla... deal with it. i have..

take heart in the fact that most celi's u see out there are GT auto's....
