Celica=slow?

i just noticed last night how my car REALLY is slow raced a old bmw 325 something and i couldnt keep up on the highway he was always ahead of me a good 5 car lengths even when i hit lift in 5th i think my lift bolt is broken or my engines blown?

GT-S's may not be that fast, but you still shouldn't have had that much trouble with an older 325i. :shrugs:
If he was stock it should be a drivers race. If he had bolt ons and you were stock you would get blown away. Lift still only gives you 180 hp (160 to the wheels) so it's not like you should expect to beat a car that has more hp than you (not to mention through most of the powerband unlike with the 2zz).

Anyways, yes your car is slow, without significant spending you'd be hard pressed to see anything better than high 13's (and even that doesn't come cheap). Still a great car though just pick your races better and brush up on your driving.

Probably an E36. At those speeds the weight advantage of the Celica won't help it much. The BMW had the better gearing, combined with its available torque, I can see this happening.

Celica is slow, it's a fact; but with some little mod's and a good driving, you should beat some other cars, not by 1km but simply beat them.
The lil' difference in torque they have is killed by the weight excess, especially on german cars...
A friend's got an E36 2.0L (6cyl), he never defeat me from a dead stop, I always take him ~10m directly. In the highway ok it's another question, he's got more torque to achieve higher speeds.
Well, in EU we have less powered cars than yours in USA, but it's still funny ;)

When you look at BMWs, you can't just look at engine output.

What makes them such fantastic cars is that they have excellent power delivery throughout the RPM band and have proper gearing favoring performance over fuel economy (though lately they've been throwing in a really tall 6th gear for highway cruising).

I agree with you Marc, a 2.5L is another question... And another world compared to a 1.8L. But even with the better power troughput all over the powerband, the 2.0L BM is too much heavy with all the equipements, less aluminium parts, etc...

I think this is the first time I will agree with you. It's not fast and never will be. But it is a quick,fun car to drive and looks great. My only real gripe besides the lack of power is the rear seats, I'm a sucker for 2 seaters.

But in all seriousness I think the Celica gets a bad rep because it doesn't really fullfill it's role very good. I mean as far as sports compacts go it really is one of the better chassis' to build on, but there is no support for it, and it was an unneccesarily expensive car to begin with.

Most people who buy sports compacts want a quick car but they want it cheap, why do you think there are so many primered Civics with Ebay turbo kits driving around because they can get 300+whp for only a couple thousand dollars. The Celica doesn't really fullfill this role because it costs a lot more to buy, and costs even more to make fast, and if someone wants to spend upward of 15k on a car they might as well buy a real sports car.

So basically the only real reason to build a Celica is if you really love Celicas, or you are willing to spend 15 to 20k on an 8 year old car FWD car that might run mid 12s.

I guess I'm probably in the first bracket, but I really don't even want to try to make my car fast I'm trying for an NA build because it will probably be fun, and nice to have a really high revving NA car that isn't a Honda.

Celica is a dog compared to what is out now and compared to the competition and the aftermarket support for those cars, the Celica sucks and always has.

Today, I beat the hell out of my busted Celica on pristine roads with no cars for about 20 miles in NJ(believe it or not) and I always wish I was driving something better when I go there. I also think about how great it would be to have one of the only rotten properties there.

The only thing I give to a Celica is that it won't die, still goes, still looks decent, and has good gas mileage.

Other than that, you are beating a dead horse.

I could sell my car and then not have enough money to make a Celica fast/reliable even if I was given a Celica for free to work on.

I have to say that as an all around car, the Celica is amazing. Handles really well even in the stock from that I have it in, and it FEELS quick. For me, this is a fun car to put some money into, make my own, and then move onto something better when I am a good enough driver to deserve it. That's the point here. The Celica is an awesome car to learn on. It teaches you how to stay in a narrow powerband, make educated shifts, launch correctly, etc. You really think someone going straight from the family minivan to an EVO or STI is learning as much? Not unless they are really trying. I'm not saying the car is hard to drive, it just takes some skill...something more important than how fast your car is. You take that to the next car.

Yup, having a car isn't all about speed or how fast it is. Its sort of like having a fast computer, 95% of the population doesn't give a f*ck how fast your computer is, nor how fast your car is. The other 5% are motorheads, or drag queens. People buy cars because A) They look nice B) They're comfortable C)Reliability. Speed is never usually a factor, unless your that 5%.

Take a trip here...where every C6 Zo6 on the road is on a 100 shot or bigger...every Evo is doing 11's or better, and most turbo cars are either bigger turbo or on spray, and there is no such thing as a Stock LSx motor on the road. There is a lot of money in this city. Only place I been where I've caught a car with a chute filling up at the local Sunoco...
