Hey guys..
I still have my 2003 celica but yesterday my mom just went to pick up a new 2008 Nissan Rogue. It has the premium package meaning its fully loaded with paddle shifters. It's a 4 cylinder and looks like a sporty Morano.
I want to learn how to use it so I can teach her and myself because it looks fun...
I drive a standard celica so I understand how to shift but being it's a sport SUV it doesn't have a clutch from my understanding...
So heres my question..
What RPM's do you shift at? Do you have to downshift with the paddles? Is there anything on the gauge cluster to let you know what gear your in? How many gears are there?
Were picking it up on Friday.
EDIT** I TRIED TO SEARCH BUT IT GAVE ME 404 PAGE NOT FOUND

From my understanding you can put it into "manual" when it's in drive. I think you can shift at any RPM-2500 for best gas consumption. If you forget to downshift the car should take over and downshift for you. Im sure the gauge will tell you what gear your in. Some VW bugs have paddle shifters (idk why they would need them) but when my mom was considering getting one I drove it with the paddle shifters and it had a digital display to show you what gear your in. Just look up the # of gears for that car.

yeah when we get it on friday i'll be reading the manual but i want it in straight up terms i can understand from you guys..
theres the auto drive part, then the console shifter can lock into the left side and thats your manual (paddle shifter) spot..
from my understanding is when you downshift the vehicle will automatically rev match so as long as you dont downshift like an idiot you should be fine?
im really looking forward to driving this beast and taking it out for a test spin :D this SUV gets 37MPG and its an AWD vehicle. pretty impressive.

knock it to the sport mode, the paddle shifters arrant going to do any thing to quickly but they are good for simulating gears in the cvt just be care full you can over heat the cvt if you are really hard on the paddle shifters so just push on the up gear while in sport mode and that should start the paddle shifter's

with your lack of periods I think I may have not understood your sentence.

Ok here is how the difficulty for transmision go
Auto > Paddle/manumatic > Manual
You technically have no gears in your New SUV.
You have one Continual transmision which technicaly is running at one gear at all times.
Some cons to this is
CVTs operate smoothly. This can give a perception of low power, because many drivers expect a jerk when they begin to move the vehicle. The expected jerk of a non-CVT can be emulated by CVT control software though, eliminating this marketing problem.
Since the CVT keeps the engine turning at constant RPM over a wide range of vehicle speeds, pressing on the accelerator pedal will make the car move faster but doesn't change the sound coming from the engine as much as a conventional automatic transmission gear-shift. This confuses some drivers and, again, leads to an impression of a lack of power.
With the paddle all you will be doing is increasing the rpm and telling the computer to give you a small jerky motion, so simulate shifting to a higher gear.
So essentially drive normally XD
Its a fancy automatic pretty much.
and that CVT is why it can get UP TO 37mpg
notice the up to
those CVT have the ability to give you good mpg of driven conservitavely
but ride them and they wont
may be more common to see 28 or 29 depeding on how much city is done and how much load(additional weight) has been put on.

good post, very informative.
my mom drives really calmly so she will get high mpg.
the car won't let you shift at a "bad" RPM - it won't hold revs, it won't overrev, sometimes it won't even let you downshift
this is a basic precautionary measure to prevent morons from destroying their cars
and makes paddle shifted automatics seriously uncool and totally unfun
