I have read on here and on various other sites that dumping a clutch is better than slipping it. Why is it better to dump a clutch regarding clutch wear?

well maybe you mean

it's better for the clutch if you dont press the accelerator until the clutch is full engaged

I used to slip the clutch everytime I raced or was at a stoplight by myself(for practice) and I did get out in front of a lot of Hondas and Neons....but the end result was my dumb@ss frying my clutch at 15,000 miles and having to buy a new one :(

I have the BFG drag radials up front now....heat them up real good and drop the clutch at 5k and it hooks and goes. I don't races as much now(track season closed for year) I wouldn't slip the clutch again unless I was on street tires and was lined up with worthy competition-- Si :)

well maybe this question should have been on the Technical Discussion Forum, but I was interested in physically(friction-wise and mechanically) why slipping a clutch was worse than dumping the clutch.

this clutch slipping (http://www.maximumf1.com/articles/clutches.htm) thing should help. judging from that, there is more friction when the plates are coming together more slowy (slipping the clutch?) than when the clutch is dumped and they slam together. true, there is more wear on your syncros when you dump the clutch, but there is less friction between plates. at least that is my interpretation, set my right if i'm wrong.
