hello today i took off my muffler/tail pipe or what ever you call it and i took it for a spin around the block to see how loud it was and it was very loud. as i was pulling up into my garage i noticed that a quarter of my gas was gone. i just filled up my tank this morning. does driving without a muffler/tail pipe burn more gas?
thanks in advance

It shouldnt. Mind you , i have never tried this... but the exhaust has nothing to do with your engine burning gas. Unless your CEL came on, then your car goes into a type of "safe mode" from what i have heard. The CEL (check engine light) normally causes you to run rich, thus burning more gas.
If i am wrong about any of this, correct me. This is just what i have read while being here on NC.org.

I don't know what to say. It has to be completely unrelated, because theres no way you'd be burning that much gas, especially since in theory you should get BETTER gas mileage with an unbolted exhaust, due to less backpressure.

i also had the car on for a while, revved it high 6k to 7k a couple times and i hit red line driving down the block when i was coming back.

i used to unbolt my exhaust before, kinda similar situation. I dunno if you noticed it but is there like traces of gas leak on your gas lid??? When me and my friend was trying to see what causes it, it seems like I dunno if it's true though but if you unbolt your exhaust, the heat from the the exhaust will heat up your gas tank and your gas will expand/boil??? sometimes you can get a CEL. so yeah, just my .02 from my previous experience

Try resetting the ECU?

You are either overreacting to nothing, or you are leaking gas.
Pick one.

no i just checked the ground and under the car no leaks. i dont know but the gas went back up 2 bars. i think raising the rear end of the car messes with the gas level and i think the computer thinks some gas is gone

ok today i just got my muffler...its a himoto tenrai off of ebay..i just got done installing it and the gas meter went back to normal i dont know why but i guess it was about raising the rear end of the car. the thing i am worried about is the brake line its got burnt but not all of the way. its only burnt to show the last layer of the rubber housing. what should i do to cover it up? wire tape? duct tape?
thanks for all of your help

replace it. Your probably going to need to bleed your brakes now as well. chances are that you have burnt up some of your brake fluid creating air in the line.

So you lost your quarter of your gas which you just filled up that day. No leaks? I guess gas leaks have nothing to do with that, gas leaks on the ground can't make it's way back to your tank to reflect your bars in two (oh make that 3)
