after a long months wait...i finally have my car back. i hydrolocked it about a month ago. i got a brand new toyota short block installed, head reconditioned at machine shop, and a bunch of the hoses n stuff replaced and it came out to be 5300. insurance paid 4k of it. i was pretty happy with the outcome. so now im at like 10 miles on my new engine lol. the car only has like 68k on it tho:) so when they switched out the engine he said someone had cut a hole by the CAI so that it would get more air! and so when i drove the water my tires were spitting water STRAIGHT into my intake lol.
he also said theres a cover on the bottom of the car thats missing by the fender that i should replace so the water wont go straight up there too. what piece is he talking about? so hopefully in the next few weeks ill get my hood stripe painted and start lookin for a silver body kit on here!

if you learn anything from this ditch the CAI. not worth the risk in my opinion. get a short ram or just stock. you wont notice a huge difference.

Ditch the CAI and get a SRI..
Im sure someone would trade you on here..
Or keep the CAI for the hot times, and get a SRI for the rainy season..

Yeah when i got the car it said it had the cai on it and i found out about the risk but i was thinking...i doubt anyone would buy it if it was that easy to do right? and if you were going to have one...the safest place would be arizon new mexico or texas right? so i thought i was fine...but the problem is our city isnt set up for rain. so if it does rain hard for 4 hours everything floods including the highways.
Oh im definitely ditching the CAI. im actually going to sell it on here. U guys think id be ok getting the Ebay SRI? its only like 50 bucks. and i dont have a lot of money to spend. Oh and like i said... does anyone know what my mechanic was talking about when he said the peice below was missing? like a cover?

Ive had a CAI on since January. I havnt had any issues. And I have driven through some heavy rain before. If theres big puddles I definately avoid them or drive my truck. I just put a body kit on. I installed an Injen heat shield to protect from bottom splash, and I used some fiber cloth and resin to cover the slots on the fender liner.
My intake should stay fairly dry now. During a heavy rain with puddles about 2 inches deep, I soaked the intake, but i never hydrolocked, the soaked cone caused a lot more resistance in air flow thus making the motor not rev past 5k. But once it dried out it was fine.

you have to actually submerge your cone for a while to get hydrolock... or i guess have an open hole in the intake in your case. just think about the cai like a vacuum cleaner you just dont have enough vacuum to suck tones of water through the cone and straight up a 2"+ pipe unless you have water cutting off all opening so that its not using any vacuum...i don't think they are as dangerous as people say they are...i live in PA and we have some pretty big puddles and miniature rivers on the side of the road when it rains and i do just fine. I have both guards and duck tape across the wheel well openings

oh really now. yeah i think ill stick with an sri. im not too worried about performance. my car weighs too much. Sound is more important to me than speed. plus i dont have a lot of money to put into it. it came with an awesome exaust and the cai and a short shifter so downgrading to the ebay sri isnt a biggie for me. my next step is getting my hood stripe painted and maybe a body kit. ill try to find those plastics on the forum here.
