I took off the needles to install my indiglo gauge, and now the calibration is off!

I know my Tachometer is off, because my car has it idling at around 1200 RPM, when I normally idle at i think around 700! Also, something else isn't right. My RPM lags at around 3500 RPM, once it gets up there, and it freezes there for a moment, and then it goes up slowly. Is it scraping the gauge or something?

My speedometer is also off, because when I am stopped and going 0 miles per hour it has me going 2 MPH! DOH! Haha, also I can tell a major difference, like my speedo will say I'm going 60, but it definately feels like I'm going more around 45 or so. I went around looking for one of those road-side radar detectors to see how off my speedo was, but I couldn't find one.

Anyways, any ideas on how to fix this? Oh, and please don't say "slide the indiglo gauge over the needles," because I already skipped that step and can't go back :D Help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

i'm under the impression that if you do so much as touch the needles the wrong way, you break em, and there is NOTHING u can do but buy a new cluster!! that is what i was told when i was installing my indiglo gauges.

If you use the search function, I think someone posted instructions on how to recalibrate the gauges, but I don't know if it works. Anyways, it is worth a shot I suppose.

for the needle getting stuck at 3500 rpm momentarily, i can tell u the needle is getting stuck against the face of the cluster. i had same problem, i think u may have pushed the needle on a bit too hard, try pulling it off again, reinstall it and dont push on as hard this time.

cheers

recalibration worked for me .... i cant really remember the steps involved though.... my speedo is off...but only by about 1 mph..tach is exact.... same as my safc.

if you remember what your tach was at idle, then you can redo that. what i do, is that after you've ran the car for quite a while, then it should idle just under 1000 rpm. so i'd set the needle there when the car's idled.

as for the speedo, i had the needle in one hand, found a pretty deserted street, and followed a friend telling them to go 30 (or the speed limit) for a consistant period. once we got up to where i felt was good i placed the needle there. if was a challenge to do, but it was the only way i could figure how.

and don't forget that you don't want to push too hard. friction between the face and the needles will cause them not to move, just as platnm mentioned.

why not take it to a speed shop and get it calibrated again

The tach sticking is probably the needle rubbing against the gauge face. I had this problem in my 6th Gen, and to correct it, I took a razor blade and removed a very small bit of plastic from the underside of the needle. It's kind of hard to explain where I removed the layer of plastic from, but I'll try.

You've got the needle, and the big knobby part that attaches to the cluster, and then on the other side of the knobby part opposite of the actual needle, there's a little part that sticks out a little. This is the part that was rubbing against my gauges. I just took a very thin layer of plastic off the bottom of that part, and I didn't have any more trouble.

I never had to deal with calibration issues, because I never removed the needles to put my gauges on.

I took mine off and had little trouble putting them back on, but they might but 100RPM off!
