I have been told that 35's will cause damage to rims once you hit a nice pothole. Do you guys think I should get some 35's or safe 40's.

to tell the truth 40s arent really much bigger than 35s
you hit a pothole hard in both and youre gonna be hurting either way.
however with 40s on 18s your rolling diamater is gonna increase a bit slowing your speedo down
i'd go with 225/35/18 myself

MD get 35's i have racingharts on my car with 40's and they look 17's with hotchkis drop but my rims are 18's. but just drive safely man u can hurt something..

Get 225/35-18...I'm sure they're trying to give you those garbage Proxes FZ4's in 215/35 but tell them you want the Proxes T1S in 225/35.
