Hello all,

This one might seem a little silly... but still annoying. I have a 2001 Celica GTS, and today, I noticed that the leather cover on my gear shift (manual) felt into the hole that it fits in. In other words, the bottom part came apart from the console. Does anyone know how to fix that? Is it supposed to be glued? Or does it snap into a fixture underneath? And how do I get into the console? (I have no experience in "do it yourself" repairs)

Thanks for helping..

It just snaps back into place if you pull up on it. If you want to take if off unscrew your shift knob and simply reach into the boot area and lift up at teh back - that whole section just kinda pops out.

Thanks for the reply Griffin. But isn't there a risk of tearing the leather? if I just pull it upwards? Also, are you saying that I don't need to unscrew the knob, and open up the console, to have access?

Sorry if I sound ignorant.. I have no "hands on" experience whatsoever...

You DO need to unscrew the knob to pull the whole assembly up

as for tearing the leather... I popped mine back into place with no prob when I knocked it down so that probably wont be a problem.

Course you could just bring it to the dealer and have them fix it under warranty.

I just pulled mine back up through w/o tearing it. I pulled up one side at a time to make sure they all went into the slots...alot easier than taking the knob off.

The shift knob simply unscrews and then the plastic panel surronding the boot just unsnaps with little effort ...very easy really.

Mine has beem off three times alrerady for various reasons with absolutly no problems.

that spot under there makes a handy spot to hide contraban. I used it last weekend, Coming back from canada, I hid a bag under there while I went through customs.

Just hope they don't bring the dogs to sniff around. If they do, you are short as hell. As for the request for information, the guys before me are all absolutely corredct, my plastic bracket has slipped down into the cavity several times and each time I simply pulled upwards on the boot and it snapped back into place with no incurred damage. You don't need to apply much pressure. Good luck.

when ever I clean my interior, I always pull the shift boot out and put leather conditioner on it. It's so easy, how could he not figure it out on his own.
