Hey .. well i took it to the dealer (praying its not a rock in the condenser) The Toyota A/C man said this was like the 5th celica up here with the a/c being weak. Well he said if they sat in the "factory" for a while the refrigerant might of merged with the oil in the system (this is true ... i know ... i am an A/C man)
The other problem is that toyota did not put enough refrigerant in the system at factory .... and it only need A VERY LITTLE.

Hmm...thanks for the info. My A/C is very good though so far, but that may be because I use it maybe once a week. But I know if it does ever start acting up that one of those two problems is most likely the cause.

i've used my a/c maybe once or twice in the past 2 years...donno why, but for some reason I always feel like it's bad for the car, cause when you want to use it, is when it's damn hot out, and running the a/c just makes the engine run hotter....

i always drive with the fans off, vent open, turned to defroster, and heat up....keeps the engine a few degrees cooler, right?...anyone else do this? is it really doing anything or am i suffering in the heat breeze for no reason?

Yeah I just dont' know anymore... Toyota said that I have a hole in my condensor... but somehow I have A/C now after they refilled it.... weird... I would think all the stuff would have leaked out by now....

I'm in the same boat as Chris25NJ, I don't like to use the AC for the same reason. Why make the engine work harder and hotter on a hot day? I also thought that having the knob on defrost turns the AC on?

Why would they put AC in a car then if it would be bad for it and cause them to repair it more often? But if you enjoy sweating go right ahead.

I think Toyota thought it out clearly of the Celica being in 100+ degree weather with AC on....
I drive in 100+ degree weather everyday and put the AC on high and drive for about an hour each day. I had the AC on the whole way down to California and back(Vegas), while in the day time(hot) and the Celica's temp gauge didnt budge a bit.

I agree with inline4 on this one. I doubt Toyota would overlook the AC thing and put it in a car with the risk of the engine overheating. Anyways, I don't use it much at all, so I don't worry about it.

Yes, putting the car on defrost does turn the the A/C on. So Don't think you're saving yourself anything by that.

I'd rather the car get hot than me sweating inside.

I lived in Phx for the first two years I owned my Celi, and during the summer it would get up to 115+ degrees. I had the A/C blowing full blast, sitting in rush hour traffic every day all summer and I have never had a problem w/ the A/C or the car. The temp needle never even went one tick above normal and the A/C would cool the car inside of 10 min. no matter how hot it got. Toyota did a VERY good job keeping this engine cool...

i open the moonroof, open the windows, turn on the fan up to the 2nd or 3rd notch... and drive.... usually cools the car...

only time i use a/c is when theres a passenger and he's/she's complaining.... or... if im wearing dressy clothing and it wouldnt be good if i sweated in it....

a/c is pretty good IMO.... cuz the car is small and air recirculates pretty quickly.... good enough for southern cali...

thanks for the heads up BRAK

HEHE, I do exactly the same thing as Chris25NJ. Barely used my AC....only goes on when my parents or gf are in the car and they want to turn it on and I can't do anything.

Also, tool462, the reason why your temp didn't go up another tick is because if you look closely, the next tick on the temp guage is all the way up at where it's almost at the very top. So you never know how hot the engine ACTUALLY is.

Not completely true. If the cooling system is up to snuff, the engine doesn't run hotter with the A/C on. The only thing that has wear added to it by running the A/C is the compressor. If you're worried about adding loads to your engine, why get rid of the PS as well. That's also providing a load. And it's going all the time.

The point is, you lived in Pheonix. The heat outside doesn't affect the A/C performance as much as the humidity.

Did the dealer refilled it or did you AC man??
I want them to refill it or top if off (ha ha)... I think it should be little more colder....

Well i dont have R134A gauges ... I only have R-22/R-12. So i could not check the charge , the a/c guy at the dealership did the gauge check ... leak check (usually done with soapy bubbbles).. then put a very little in. You have to be carefull not to overcharge the system with refrigerant or you could "slug" the compresor with liquid refrigerant = NOT GOOD. Take it to the dealer and ask if they could check your refrigerant charge and see if its at good pressure.

i don't understand how putting the dial to defrost puts the a/c on? i have the power to the fans off, so the light on the a/c button is not lit. a/c should only come on when the fans are on, and the a/c button is lit.

i'm sure the engine is designed to run properly with the a/c on hot days, but i'm sure doing what I do, drastically decreases the temp the engine is running at, and running the compressor does take considerable power out of the engine, therefore engine needs to work harder (which means hotter).

point is, i really hate my 70 mile commute each day, and try to do everything i can keep the celi running strong

glad to hear other people do the same :)

The a/c in my car sucks, I think I should get mine checked then. Mine takes forever to get cold.
