I was trying to focus on the wing and blur out the rest of the car, but I need more information on what mode to use on my camera and exactly how to do that?

whatever you do don't use the flash. if you want blur mostly everything around the spoiler try setting your lens at f/1.8. what mode do you usually shoot in? try shooting in manual mode to have control of all the settings

if you want a shallow depth of field while focusing on a specific object, use your 50mm f/1.8, like luis mentioned and set it at either M or Av (aperture mode), set your aperture to its largest - 1.8 and to focus on a certain spot of the car, manually select your focus point. it should be a button that has an asterisk on it.

We've got the same lens gear.

This is how I do it.

I personally do everything in manual (M) mode. You yourself have to go in and change all the settings yourself, ISO, WB, SS, and Aperture. I get the best results from this mode.. i would experiment with this along with the other modes of the camera. Also, manual focus is a great way to get exactly what you want.
