Kangaruu, very very true. That last set is in my hometown though. I need to get out of the country again in a few years.
I need to improve my photography skills, any constructive criticism/advice? Pretty much all those are just taken with default settings.

2nd shot is really nice
Well, I don't know anything about photography, but I asked a friend of mine who has taken some really cool photos (http://www.flickr.com/photos/frenchstarr/sets/72157616172755125/) what she thought, and first she said good shots. :P
She also said you're probably closing in on the limit of what a point and shoot camera can give you, because even in manual modes they don't let you have too much control over your shots.
Finally, she said this website helped her out a lot: http://digital-photography-school.com/
Well rock on man, thanks. I am looking into getting a DSLR, but they are just so damn pricey. I will definitely check out that site.
I hear that, my wife has been eying an SLR for months.
Few more taken around my neighborhood

nice, the canon isnt a bad camera just it appears as tho you are using the stock lens, u shuold get a lens with image stable, ultrasonic, and maco settings, the 72mm wide glass captures the image very nicely especially if u have L-series glass =] just i would go with canon name lenses, stay away from tamron and stuff like that, some are good but most of crappy and cheap.
start saving up for your next one lol... ive spent probly 4x on my camera than what i have on my car including the car... just cant stop =\

There isn't such a lens that has all of three characteristics other than the Canon 100mm L Macro or the 150mm L macro. Those are thousand dollar lenses and pretty much for specialty use especially for a crop DSLR like the XS and wouldn't really be worthwhile to drop that kind of cash on a lens such as those.
just i would go with canon name lenses, stay away from tamron and stuff like that, some are good but most of crappy and cheap.
Wrong, there are plenty of third party lenses that will out perform Canon lenses. Examples are the Sigma 50mm f/1.4, Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8, Tokina 12-24mm f/4.0. Don't remember any other ones on the top of my head.
You just need to do your research before dropping the cash on a certain lens. So far www.photozone.de has done me good in researching lenses because their tests seem to be accurate. They have quite a long list of Canon and third party lenses that they have thoroughly tested as well.

Well thanks for the info.
Well thanks for the info. Dude, no joke, Kang has done his research on lenses for Canon. Whether they are Canon, Tamaron, Sigma, or Tokina. I ask him about it before going any further on the subject.
I've research my Tokina 12-24 and Canon's 10-22 UWA. Tokina has slightly more favorable reviews. Tough call, but affordability and having a bit better reviews tipped Tokina off the scale.

Likewise. That lens has one of the best resolution numbers I've seen from photozone.de's tests, even starting from the widest aperture. The f/2.8 is awesome too

Oh I just read a review for it. The resolution for the Canon 100mm macro is pretty identical to the Tamron 90mm.
But the Canon has the edge of USM and FTM as well as IF. Unless the Canon is significantly more expensive I think it's more worthwhile to get the Canon instead.
This is probably the case for Nikon too.

You're right yes but I got mine for just over $400...the Nikon 105mm is like $800-$1000 and I am happy with my purchase for the quality I get. Depends how much youre willing to spend but either would be a great purchase :wiggle:

you mean a rolling shot? what aperture do you have it set at? lighting conditions also make a big difference so you gotta check your settings often. are you in another car or are you doing a panning shot?

indoors/outdoors? what lens are you using? try a high aperture and raising the iso to get you a faster shutter speed

If indoors you're going to have to use the flash.
mrluilou
02-06-2010, 06:28 PM
^that or try turning on all the lights in the room :chuckles:
Canon Rebel XS, kit lens, shooting in shutter priority mode, 1/60 shutter, 3.5 aperture, no flash. Indoors, under fluorescent light
I may try again with the flash later.
mrluilou
02-06-2010, 06:32 PM
take it off shutter and use manual mode instead. the problem is that we can't see how poorly lit your room is :chuckles: try keeping the aperture at its highest setting possible and what iso speed were you using?
Kangaruu
02-06-2010, 06:34 PM
Shutter priority is fine in this case since his lens can't go any wider than 3.5, so it's pretty much stuck at 1/60s and f3.5.

just try taking pics of the cat chillin because him moving around is going to be pretty difficult especially in that lighting of yours :ug:
Yeah, thats what I figured. Ones of him stationary are fine, just moving he is way too fast. The room is actually way brighter than that, just the high shutter speed makes it seem dark.
Kangaruu
02-06-2010, 06:45 PM
Definitely need to use flash. Shutter at 1/100s would be enough to freeze the motion.
