no your not a noob lol. Yes the GT models are pron to consuming oil. If you do get the GT just check the oil on a regular basis or if you can try to find a GT-S model. Those models dont have the problem. As long as you maintain the GT youll be fine. If your looking to do performance mods i wouldnt bother with the GT

there's quite a good amount of thread on this, and from what i read, it seems the only real fix was to change the block to the 03+. Not all the GT had them, just a good number of them do. How much did u find this GT for?

He maybe one of the lucky few that doesnt get one with the problem. When i had a 2000 GT mine didnt have the oil drinking problem, i got lucky.
Like Krazie asked. How much? If its like im guessing 5k you can get a 2000 GT-S model for a couple grand more.

Not bad but i would look around for a GT-S model to see how much more they will be.
Acouple grand extra for a better model or a couple grand to repair or replace engine with an 03+ if that ever comes down to it. You really gotta way the odds. A lot of the GT-S owners will chime in and tell you its worth more your time and money to invest into a GT-S model and also alot of the GT owners will say they had wished they gotten a GT-S lol.

Welcome to the boards. As pointed out already you might or might not get oil consumption problems, but the only way to tell (if the people you are buying from don't tell you) is once you've been driving it.
The price ain't too bad for the mileage. Good GT-S are at least 2K more than that so your budget determines everything. If you do consider getting a GT-S instead, get a manual, don't bother with an automatic.

I'm not one of them =) lol it's really what suits ur needs. for me the GT does more than enough, and IMO if i wanted speed and power, there's plenty of other choices then a celica. heh.

And I'll chime in I'm not one of them either. Granted I've only had my car for 2 weeks but I absolutely adore it and I still don't think the GTS would have been right for me (more expensive gas with worse mileage and I really would not have taken advantage of it. I tend to keep the revs around 3-4k in my normal driving and I'm happy with the acceleration and the fact I can get more if I push it a little more if I need better acceleration. Maybe not like the GTS but why pay extra for the car and gas for something I might occasionally use. Hell, right now I haven't even ahd a chance to really open up the GT if I wanted to see it's full potential. Ever since I got my car I either end up around slow people or cops :( ).
Oh, and I spent more to get a 2003 model to avoid the oil consumption problems. I want a car that will last a long time (as I had a feeling I'd really love the car) and consuming oil can't be good on the engine even if it is not something you would have to fix but just be an annoyance.
The only thing I regret is not test driving a GTS cause I'm curious what lift feels like (really, I don't think it would make me wish I had it instead. My 3-4k revving is what I'd be normally driving like, I just want to see what my car can do at some point). Course, I am always up for test driving other cars (I got to drive my cousin's 2005 MR2, that was fun. I'd say it is more fun than a Celica but didn't make me love my Celica less :) ).

As long as there is no oil consumption its a good deal.

Actually I have a 2000 GT-S and I consistantly get 35 mpg, even get 38 if I do a lot of highway, Lift is really nice but if you dont really care about power, the GT will do you just fine.

^Dont get how the GT-S model get less millage when i get around 400 a tank :shrugs:
Yea you have to get the higher octane with the GT-S but as far as MPG both models are about the same if not equal.
Hey Tigress theres a meet coming up if your interested
