View Full Version : Buying slightly new GTS, have quick question

Is it worth the $1100 extra to have the bumper to bumper warranty extended to 100,000miles/6 years (from original inservice date?). The car has 13,008 miles on it, and the inservice date is 5/23, so the warranty would expire on 5/23/06.
Am I better off just sticking with the limited powertrain warranty?

Depends on how hard you drive and how much the deductible is really.

...it's always a gamble. You have to decide if you think you will have more than 1100$ worth of service on the car before that extra warranty expires. This probably doesn't cover wear and tear items (tires, brakes, clutch, etc).
If it were me I would pass on the warranty. You still will have the powertrain warranty (5 yrs/60K miles).

do it...well actually how long does the powertrain warrenty last and u must see what it covers...i learned very quickly that it is always best to get a warrentee with the car or anything u buy becaseu it is well worht the 1100 bucks...just think about it...what happends if u break something that casts like 300+ bucks (and with toyota...that is rare) its rare becasue anytime u break somethng and bring it back it costs like 500+ bucks to get it fixed with lkabor and ewverything...so say u missshift and blow your engine..do u think it is better to pay the 1100 bucks for warrenty and never pay to fix anything or would u rather pay 6-7000 bucks after a miusshsift for a new engine and tranny not including labor..
u think about it
my advise..spend the 1100

I agree with gregRowe's perspective and opinion with the following addition:
you also need to consider how long you intend to keep the car...the sooner you expect to get rid of the car, the less sense that extended warrantly makes

Yeah, after reading gregRowe's suggestion and just thinking about it myself, I'm not going to get it. This is going to slightly delay the purchasing process, but it's not like I'm going to be able to pick up the car before 7/4/02 as it is. Contracts are going to have to be redone, financing will be refigured, all that good stuff..
I also took a harder look at the brochure and that helped seal the deal.. A few of the things listed are: supercharger, intercooler, turbo wastegate, intercooler, Carburetor, Diesel Fuel Injection Pump.. I don't think I need any of that kind of coverage, and it just serves to make it look like there are LOTS of parts that can go bad.
My faith in automotive electrical engineering is pretty solid -- I've seen the engineering department at my school and was impressed enough.. I would think that anything electrical that will fail, should do so during the 36,000 mile shakedown cruise. Aside from that, the powertrain is all I really need to worry about I think, aside from the A/C.. and that's covered until 2006, up to 100,000 miles

It's not always that simple, ghost. If there's a deductible, then you may end up paying another $100 per visit to the repair shop (or even for each repair). And you could always earn interest on that $1100 for the next 3 years while the standard warranty is in effect. Now, if you need a new engine after your 5 year powertrain warranty has expired, then the extended warranty will probably pay for itself. But that's part of the gamble.

I am waiting for the warrenty to end before I start modding to avoid any potential voiding issues. I think that 100k would be a great warrenty if you never modded your car.
But given the nature of the car, you probably are going to want to mod it, so I am just suggesting that you take that into consideration.

:werd: I probably will, but it's going to take me a while. I drive like I'm driving a truck (well, at the moment, I do drive a truck.) A celica is a far cry from my 88 Ranger, but I'm looking forward to it.

Also - extended warranty would NEVER want to cover a mis shift - would most likely be denied.

If you are definately planning on modding it, I wouldn't go for the warrenty. They are pretty leinient on things like intakes and stuff, but if you ever get into things like forced induction, NO2, or piggy back ECU electronics, you can kiss the extended warrenty goodbye.
