Has anyone with a celica taken off the intake butterfly on their intake? What is it supposed to do? I have been seeing it around on the net. If you have can you tell me what it does

well, the stock air box has the butterlfy valve. any aftermarket intake doesnt have a butterfly valve.
from what i've heard it makes the engine a little quieter, and rob's 0.1hp(something like that).
if you remove it (which is very, very easy to do), you'll notice a the car takes and extra second to start, nothing major. the car will be a tad bit louder, and when you shut the engine off, you'll hear a hiss from that air box.

Take the butterfly out! Instructions on how to remove it are located in the Installs/performance section of this website. If nothing else it will make you car sound a little better.

Cutting a hole in your muffler will also make your car louder. Why don't you just do that?
Louder != faster. However, some of the aftermarket air intakes and cold air intakes do seem to increase power. See the Performance Mods forum.

:stupid: :nono:
While it is true that removing the butterfly will make the car sound a little louder at WOT, I was in no way saying that louder=faster. The Butterfly valve is simply in place to help quiet the car, and provide a choke at starting. However, It is fairly large and does restrict airflow through the stock airbox(dyno proven). I dont think anyone would disagree with that. So if you want to do a first mod, its free. It won't suddenly make you Dale Jr, but it only takes about 15min and again....its free.
silver2001gts, if you really feel like cutting a hole in an exhaust, I'll sell you my stock one. At least then, you can add another mod to your list.:fawk:

I certainly hope that was sarcastic. Cutting a hole in your muffler is just stupid. If you really want to gain free hp, you could unbolt the exhaust.

Oh, I'm sorry. I forgot to include a little smiley face indicating that I was being sarcastic.
Personally, I don't like the idea of performing a mod that gains very, very little power and makes the car harder to start. But it is free. Illegal for SCCA Stock class in autocross, but free!
Pull out your butterfly valve. Enjoy.
