Some people say they shift through the 1, 2, 3 and then D gears to get a few hundred more RPMs....... is this safe to do with a automatic and would it hurt my engine? (I have a Buick Regal)

You have a tachometer to keep an eye on your RPMs?
Also, you may not be any better off by revving higher. In fact, my last car was an Olds Ciera with a 2.5L I4 and I always wished it would shift EARLIER. At certain speeds, I'd mash the gas pedal to pass or merge into traffic - the tranny would downshift, the engine would rev like mad, but I wouldn't accelerate any faster than if I had stayed in the next higher gear.

yea its fine to shift on an automatic, the celica automatic is a pretty strong auto compared to some. it is faster from a stop and maybe from a roll to shift in an auto, since we have very little torque, shifting earlier doesnt really give you a good lift and more or less makes it feel like you just lost all your power
*edit*
just noticed you said you have a buick regal... i dunno how their transmitions are, and they are probably more torquey
