2012 Smart ForTwo +2 (http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/autoexpressnews/234332/smarts_fortwo_is_ready_to_grow.html)
Extra doors and seats make favorite an A1 competitor
Doubling the Smart’s carrying capacity to four people, the new variant will give the range some added practicality, letting it compete with an upcoming raft of desirable small cars such as Audi’s A1 and BMW’s Isetta. No name has yet been give to the newcomer, but it’s likely to carry the ForTwo +2 tag, indicating that it’s very much an addition to the ForTwo line-up.
It’s hoped that the new model will be much more of a success than Smart’s last four-seater, the ForFour. A joint venture with Mitsubishi, which also produced the Colt, the ForFour was not popular and canned after only two years.

I like it with the little suicide doors instead of 4 full normal doors. I've always liked the smart cars, but for the price and size I just always thought they'd get like 70 MPG and they get just over 40. Jeez, I can buy an 15 year old civic and get 40 MPG. Or if they cost about half of what they do. Again for perspective, I can buy an entry level Corolla or Civic for about the same as a smart, maybe just slightly more.

Update!
Smart's radical four-seat future (http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle/AllCars/248822/)
Smart is set for a major product overhaul that will give it a successor to the discontinued Forfour supermini.
Petrol, diesel, hybrid and all-electric powertrains are all part of the plan for both this car and the all-new Fortwo, as Smart prepares to take on BMW’s Project i city car.
In a move that its chairman, Dieter Zetsche, says will provide Smart with financial stability and the scope for growth, parent firm Daimler will jointly develop the third-gen Fortwo (due in 2012) and the new Forfour (planned for 2014) in partnership with Renault and its Japanese partner Nissan.

I actually like that last one. It would look better if the entire bottom half were red and the pillars & roof were black.

Meh, not my thing.
It'll probably be slower than anything else on the road, to the point of being dangerous.

lol TATA is an Indian (i think) car company that makes cheap, slow cars and trucks. When I was deployed in Africa saw a lot of these, especially the trucks.

I've had the car itch for a while now. And I'm out of all my warranties now except the hybrid warranty. Almost bought a G37S a few days ago.
I would buy one of these electric-mostly cars that are coming out soon. Since my commute is only 9 miles each way, I could easily stay on battery almost all the time. I would have to buy one that has a regular engine though in case I go on a longer trip. Electric only wouldn't work, but something like the Volt or Leaf definitely could.
I'm still mad at Smart for making a car the size of a sardine can that doesn't get 40 MPG and needs premium gas. Come on, my 1990 Civic got 42 MPG on cheap gas.

I'm still mad at Smart for making a car the size of a sardine can that doesn't get 40 MPG :werd: With something the size of the Smart you would have at least expected something in the order of 50 mpg.

Smart five-door hatchback planned for U.S. market (http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSN0522627120101006)
* US retail sales to start in fourth quarter of 2011
* Vehicle to be built at Nissan plant in North America
The five-door hatchback will give dealers a larger vehicle to sell than the Smart fortwo micro car that has struggled in the past two years after a brisk sales start when it was introduced to the U.S. market in 2008 amid rising gasoline prices.
"There were a lot of customer requests to offer a little bit larger vehicle," Smart USA President Jill Lajdziak said in an interview. "We're meeting the needs for what the consumer asked."
