After two years and 40,000 miles. I was passing some **** doing 50 on 65 mph highway in the freaking the fast lane and not caring at all, anyway I was passing this guy I put it third and rip past him, I'm not done and want to keep going to pull back to fourth the shifter slides in like nothing, and then I let my clutch out. I then heard the coolest and worst sound my Celica ever made. I slammed the clutch down but it was too late I glimpsed the needle going where no needle has gone before(around 9 grand). So I put in nuetral and coast the next exit and pull into a gas station. The engine is idling like crap... I call a tow and head out to the dealer, trying to figure out what bank to stop at on the way to take out a loan for my repairs. I get to the dealer and after a few minutes of talking they decide to cover it under warrenty, they told me thier was a fix for my shifter (stiffer springs that would make what I did a lot harder) and because of that they were going to cover under warrenty, I was ready to have the service guy's baby, I was so relieved. But now I really want to get rid of this thing. You can say I can't drive all you want but I drove and raced this car for two years (not to mention my previous car was manual) and it slid into second like butter, no resistance nothing. I couldn't believe myself.... Anyway add one more to the death count. And thank you thank you thank you Courtesy Toyota of Orlando...

FYI the fix includes new shift gates as well... whole different feel and I dont know of ANYONE that has them having ever mis-shifted, so ya got no worries if ya change yer mind. You can test drive an 02 if you wanna see what I mean. I wasn't too sure about them when I first got my 02 but now that I'm used to 'em I don't mind em at all. I did prefer the old style though, but then again I never got unlucky and misshifted.

Everytime I've tried shifting into 2nd above 70mph, it does not go in "like butter", but I guess in the heat of the moment, not even thinking about it, it could feel different.

Yeah, you're lucky that the people at Toyota of Orlando are so cool I bought my car from there as well and they gave me a great deal on it.

Whoops I confused the dealers names the dealer I went to was Courtesy Toyota on Semoran and University, not the one on SR 50. They even took me back to see my engine all taken apart when I came back later to deliver my stock air intake (I'm tired of the CEL with the Injen). They told me I had no compression in piston 1, 2, and 3, but somehow pistion 4 survived. It's amazing that the car could still be started and could move with so much damage. They drove it out of the service area and into the garage with no problem other than the motor sounding like crap.
Seems to be a lot of Orlando Celica's on the boards. :)

This 'fix' that you speak of.. is it something I can get installed for free as part of a warranty prevention type thing, or would I have to actually go shredding my transmission apart to get the pieces?

Although I do believe the actual act of misshifting to be driver error (I've done it myself, but caught it before any major damage was done), I've observed that it's easier to mistakenly shift in the GT-S into second gear at speeds and rpms that are too high than in any other stick-shift car I've ever driven.

Ironically, you have to actualy misshift and blow your engine for them to do the Mod...

when i misshifted, it went into 2nd so smooth i couldnt believe it happened. when i got the 2002 shift gates i tried to misshift on purpose while the clutch was in, and there is tons of resistance. ever since i got my car fixed, ive been to scared to use lift. one day ill try it again, i just dont want it to happen again. someone mentioned that the misshift hasnt happen on an 02, is that true?

there is a TSB out that covers difficulty going into gears when stopped. I think that if you have this TSB done to your gt-s you will get the new shifter.

ya know its funny.. im sure the stock shifter in the Celica feels like butter but when you come from drivnig my Eclipse where all the gears are like butter like you mention and go to driving a Celica with a short shifter,, youd be amazed at how hard it wuold be to get the car back into 2nd.. you actually have to force the Celica shifter where you wanna go, ofcourse the gears are definitely closer but I dont buy the butter thing with a short shifter. might be somewhat of a help :)

Much as it pains me I have to agree with Larry. While I try never to say never it has never been "easy" to pull second in my car at any speed. Since my car was produced I believe in March of 00 I think it has different springs than the first Celicas though.

Try doing a search, but I don't recall hearing about any in 2002 OR 01/00 that have had the tranny mod done. Haven't heard of any Matrixes either.

Well I mention it in about every one of these types of posts, but:
My 2000 6-speed would go into any gear at any speed, like butter. Don't know what the deal was. It was kinda scary. Imagine going down the highway at 65-70 in 6th, pushing in the clutch and putting it right into 1st gear with no problem and no grinding. That's what mine did. Or could do. I hit 2nd instead of 4th twice. Never blew an engine thanks to my excellent left leg reactions. ;) But I know what you're talking about when you say it went into 2nd like butter. When I went 3rd to 2nd instead of 4th, it went right it. It felt like I would have had to force it into 4th. It went right into 2nd.
OfficeMonkey -- sorry to hear about your trouble, but that's cool that they are covering it.

I've noticed the exact same thing. The build date of my GT-S is 8/99 by the way (one of the older ones).

Mine was built in 03/00 I'm sure that doesn't help that theory much. But I was passing someone not like I was in full blown race mode and manhandling the shifter I just simply pulled back and it felt like fourth, went in nice and smooth..... The rest is history. But I have learned my lesson any fourth gear shifts will be done with my palm facing the passenger seat. And I recommend everyone else shift with this technique. Don't blow your motors like me. Better the extra time to become accustomed than to be without a car....
