Scion iQ (http://www.autoweek.com/article/20090401/NEWYORK/904019980)
This Scion iQ looks similar to the Toyota iQ city car now on sale in Europe. The iQ is billed as a 3+1. That means it could carry three adults and a child, or some luggage. Its size and shape bring to mind the Smart Fortwo.

Though it's small, the iQ has earned top safety rankings in Europe. Leading its safety features is an airbag that deploys to cover the rear window, protecting the heads of back-seat passengers in a rear collision.

Officially, this Scion iQ is a concept. But there's little doubt that a production version will hit Scion's U.S. dealerships in the near future.

I'd take this over a Smart car any day.

Scion's iQ concept is a new urban vehicle with a revolutionary package that is just over 10 feet in length and accommodates three plus luggage. As more and more urban centers are revitalized with a new sense of purpose, energy, and creativity, young people are moving in from the suburbs to embrace new urbanism and are looking for a car that suits their needs and delivers high emotional value.

Scion's iQ concept is the intelligent answer to this need for highly emotional and efficient urban transportation. The convenience of having work, entertainment and culture nearby for young city-dwellers is a significant draw to urban centers. The vehicle must be able to navigate narrow, congested streets, park in tight places, have impressive fuel economy, and have compelling design and function.

"Scion's iQ concept turns traditional auto design upside down," said Jack Hollis, Scion vice president. "Traditionally small vehicles have been thought of as being basic. The iQ concept is just the opposite with its innovative features and iconic urban design, and we believe it fits in well within the Scion brand. Our young, trendsetting buyers are creative and innovative forward thinkers, and we think they will appreciate what iQ has to offer."

The production iQ is currently sold in Japan and Europe. Five Axis of Huntington Beach, Calif. took the iQ to the next level with aggressive exterior and interior modifications that show the vehicle's potential for personalization.

With its 78.7-inch wheelbase, the three-door hatchback can deftly maneuver through city traffic. At the same time, its overall length of 126.9-inches, overall width of 71.4-inches, and short front and rear overhangs allow the iQ to fit in virtually any city parking space. The front-mounted differential and repositioned steering rack decrease front end length. In addition, the iQ is equipped with a flat gas tank housed beneath the floor that reduces rear overhang.

Pushing the wheels of the small, bold concept towards the four corners of the body gives the iQ a confident stance. The custom 18-inch wheels with a nickel finish and wide tires fill the wheel well, adding to its surefootedness. The iQ's custom front air dam, aero headlamps and high-intensity LED driving lamps signal urban road readiness.

"We believe the Scion iQ micro-subcompact concept is the future of transportation," said Hollis. "If it should join our future line-up, I think it could reach iconic status like our xB. Its styling will attract attention and if it's a Scion, you know it'll be easy to personalize."

The iQ's profile is defined by a strong and high beltline. Smooth lines glide from the large, dark finish headlamps, up the A-pillar, across the roof and wrap around the rear emphasizing the concept's geometric beauty. Side mirrors with integrated turn signals accent the clean design.

The rear emphasizes the vehicle's modern style. Trapezoidal lines run toward the wheels, from the hatch to the thick rear diffuser, creating a substantial presence. A center-mounted trapezoid exhaust adds to the vehicle's distinctiveness, while large, matte-finished rear taillights help keep the vehicle visible.

The iQ's interior fuses function, style and entertainment. Attention to detail and modern accents can be seen in the illuminated door handle; the swiveling spotlight that hovers over the dash; an illuminated iQ logo on the passenger-side dash and nickel and raw aluminum toned interior panels. Iridescent green and gray honeycomb upholstery covering the door panels and seating areas, combined with the custom exterior paint, provides a balance of freshness and sophistication. Black matte scuba-like polyurethane covers the seat bolsters and is also used on the headliner with a bright green topstitch for a contemporary finish.

The iQ features a 10-inch panel LCD screen on top of the center cluster that serves as the main entertainment console and navigation system interface. With the push of a button, the touch-screen articulates to reveal the entertainment hub. The touch screen can also play movies while the vehicle is parked. When not in use, the screen lays flat on the dash with a translucent cover that emits a colorful display of light patterns to make the interior even more unique.

A few quick strokes to the black panel below the entertainment hub, or steering wheel controls, command the audio system to shuffle through a music library. The center cluster also features three control knobs for dual front heating and air conditioning settings. The driver and front passenger each have a knob that displays their desired temperature and controls their temperature and fan settings. The center knob dictates zone control for both occupants.

The instrument panel has a speedometer, warning lamps, and a multi-information display. The multi-information display allows the driver to toggle through the odometer, average speed, temperature and eco lamp. The eco lamp illuminates during efficient driving to help the driver achieve maximum fuel economy.

Comfortable front passenger legroom was achieved with a newly-engineered, compact air conditioning unit located behind the center of the front console. The iQ employs a glove bag, with the same textured, honeycomb fabric as the front and rear seats, that can be easily snapped on and off for storage or additional legroom.

Rear seating can accommodate one adult behind the front passenger and a child, small package, or pet behind the driver. Extra slim front seat backs provide rear passengers with legroom. The rear seats are 50/50 and fold flat for increased utility. In addition, the rear seat cushion lifts up to reveal a small flat storage space that can be used for pocket-sized portable music players, small books, digital cameras, or slim laptops.

The iQ does not skimp on safety and is equipped with Vehicle Stability Control (VSC); an anti-lock brake system (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD); Brake Assist (BA); and nine SRS airbags, which includes the world's first rear window curtain airbag. Other airbags include driver and front passenger front airbags; driver and front passenger seat-mounted side airbags; side curtain airbags; a driver knee airbag; and a front passenger seat cushion airbag.

Scion iQ Coming (http://www.motortrend.com/features/auto_news/2009/112_0909_scion_iq/index.html)
Chief engineer Hiroki Nakajima says the tiny car is central to Toyota's global carbon dioxide reduction strategy. It needs minimal modifications, mostly to the bumpers, to meet U.S. standards. The car will be lengthened by an inch and a half, and it still will be six-inches shorter than the body-kitted New York concept car. Airbags will be recalibrated for unbelted and out-of-position occupants. The car has nine bags, including one above the rear window for rear seat occupants' heads in a tail-end impact.

I'm ready to see these on US roads.

Gazoo Racing Tuned by MN iQ (http://www.7tune.com/toyota-iq-gazoo-racing-tuned-by-mn-now-on-sale/)
The biggest change is under the hood with a 1.3L 2NR-FE engine (also to be made available on regular iQ models) mated to a model specific 6-speed manual transmission putting out 98PS at 6000rpm and 12.4kg/m at 4400rpm. Lowered suspension, body reinforcement, special 16 inch alloy wheels and rear disk brakes make the GRMN a much sportier proposition but probably won’t entice too many Altezza or MR-S owners to trade in their cars.

There are only 100 examples available which should go some way to justifying the almost 2,000,000 JPY asking price (not including the optional features in the images).

Scion iQ Hybrid, Five-Door and Convertible (http://www.insideline.com/toyota/iq/scion-iq-hybrid-five-door-and-convertible.html)
Although it's sold all over the world as a Toyota, the iQ microcompact will launch in the U.S under Toyota's Scion brand in 2011. First up: an iQ hybrid.

Although it's sold all over the world as a Toyota, the very small car (it's about the size of a Smart) will launch in the U.S under Toyota's Scion brand and will come in four flavors. First the iQ hybrid will arrive as a five-door hatchback, followed by a possible sedan version.

Also part of the future Scion iQ lineup is a gas-powered three-door, which has been on sale in Europe and Japan for some time, and a convertible model referred to internally by Toyota as the iQ Sports. It'll get a retractable top, much like you can get on a Smart Fortwo, and be powered by the same 93-horsepower 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine that powers the iQ in Europe.

Power for the new Scion iQ hybrid should come from a system that mates a 1.5-liter gasoline engine to an electric motor for about 100-120 hp combined. This revolutionary hybrid system is rumored to get more than 60 mpg. Cost is expected to be about $15,000, pricing the iQ hybrid approximately $5,000 less than the larger Toyota Prius.
http://media.il.edmunds-media.com/scion/iq/ns/scion_iq_f34_ns_106102_717.jpg

Scion Unveils a New Dimension with All-New 2011 iQ (http://www.autoblog.com/2010/03/31/2011-scion-iq-new-york-2010-reveal/)
[QUOTE]iQ Defines Premium Micro-Subcompact
Meeting the needs of a new trendsetting generation of urban drivers, the iQ succeeds at taking big ideas and concentrating them into a small package. Made possible by intelligent and functional packaging, the iQ is a small car that offers the functionality and comfort that drivers expect from a car twice its size.

The iQ's profile, defined by a strong and high beltline, glides from the large, stout headlamps, up the A-pillar, across the roof and wraps around the rear, emphasizing the iQ's geometric shape. Side mirrors with integrated turn signals accent the clean design.

The rear emphasizes the vehicle's modern style. Trapezoidal lines run toward the wheels, from the hatch to the bumper's rear diffuser-like accent, creating a substantial presence. With a 78.7-inch wheelbase and a unique suspension design – consisting of MacPherson struts up front, and a torsion beam rear suspension – the three-door hatchback can deftly maneuver through city traffic. In addition, its overall length of only 120.1-inches, width of 66.1-inches, and short front and rear overhangs create a confident stance that still allows the iQ to fit into virtually any urban parking scenario.

Engineering innovations like a compact air-conditioning unit, inverted front-mounted differential, and electronic power-steering system with compact steering column, all amount to significant decreases in front-end length. In addition, the iQ is equipped with a flat gas tank housed beneath the floor that reduces rear overhang.

The iQ's functional "3+1" seating equates to the world's smallest four-passenger vehicle. With the driver's and front-passenger's seats being slightly off set, this innovative seating arrangement allows for one adult behind the front passenger and a child, small package, or pet behind the driver. A first for Scion, extra-slim front seat backs are utilized to provide rear passengers with ample legroom. The rear seats are extremely versatile, featuring a 50/50 split and the ability to fold flat, creating enough storage to accommodate up to two golf bags.

The iQ is small in size but large on safety. Active safety features include Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), an anti-lock brake system (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA) and Traction Control (TRAC).

The iQ will come standard with 10 SRS airbags, including the world's first rear-window curtain airbag. Other airbags include driver- and front-passenger airbags; driver- and front-passenger seat-mounted side airbags; side curtain airbags; driver- and front-passenger knee airbags; and a Scion-first driver seat-cushion airbag.

The 2011 iQ is equipped with a 1.3-liter, four-cylinder engine that produces over 90 horsepower and features the latest dual VVT-i, which allows it to be impressively efficient, providing a broader powerband yet requiring less fuel and generating fewer emissions.

The iQ's engine is combined with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) that helps deliver smooth acceleration and excellent fuel efficiency. The iQ will be rated as an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV-II), and it is expected to achieve a combined fuel economy in the high 30s, comparable to similar vehicles that feature less passenger and cargo capacity.

The iQ comes standard with a six-speaker audio system and is available with multiple audio head units for various degrees of audiophiles. All iQs will be outfitted with USB and auxiliary ports, allowing personal devices to be easily integrated into the car. Steering-wheel-mounted controls command the audio system to adjust volume and shuffle through music sources such as CD, AM/FM, auxiliary input, or a library from your iPod

2011 Toyota iQ gets upgraded interior (http://carscoop.blogspot.com/2010/08/paris-preshow-2011-toyota-iq-and-aygo.html)
For the 2011 iQ, which will be sold in the States under the Scion brand, Toyota is increasing the level of perceived quality with the use of higher-grade, soft-touch plastics on the dashboard and the door panels, the introduction of new color schemes and upgraded trim options.

Driving the 2010 Toyota iQ GRMN + Supercharging Concept (http://www.insideline.com/toyota/iq/2010/driving-the-2010-toyota-iq-grmn-supercharging-concept.html)
Think of It as the 2012 Scion iQ + Supercharging

Passionate Sportiness
Despite its modest extra thrust, the iQ's neatly packaged supercharged engine doesn't sound all that inspiring when stretched, but the sound coming out of the single oval tailpipe at the back is good and rorty.

Because this car is a valuable one-off, we were told to take it easy and keep the speed down. Even so, the 2010 Toyota iQ GRMN + Supercharging has genuine driver appeal. It has poise on the road and it's keen to buzz through the gears, feeling much quicker and livelier than its specifications would suggest.

Maybe not everything's quite gone to plan, however, as this supposedly light and lithe supercharged iQ weighs 2,160 pounds, 110 pounds heavier than the standard iQ. Does it matter? Not really. This is just a concept, but it's going in the right direction to bring back the luster to the Scion badge in America, never mind Toyota's image in Japan.

Toyota iQ Disco Concept to Glamour Rock German Showrooms (http://carscoop.blogspot.com/2010/10/toyota-iq-disco-concept-to-glamour-rock.html)
Say 'hallo' to Toyota's bling-bling shiny iQ Disco, a concept model that was created by the firm's German division purely for demonstration purposes as the oversized Japanese disco ball on wheels will tour dealerships all over the country, starting from showrooms in Cologne.

The transformation wouldn't be complete without a professional DJ system that consists of 15-inch bass reflex subwoofer, a two-channel mixer and two Numark NDX 800 players. Toyota said the system can play various music formats and delivers up to 1000 watts and a peak sound pressure of 130 dB.

There's a ride and drive of the 2012 Scion iQ happening in California today where they've just released pricing on the upcoming microcar. $15,995 will get you into a new iQ when it (finally) goes on sale this fall if you're on the West Coast, January in the South followed by the East Coast and then the Midwest.

For your money you'll get a 120.1-inch long car that's 66 inches wide with a 1.3-liter 4cyl and CVT transmission.

how much does this little thing weigh? Didn't find the numbers

A Fiat 500 is about 2300lbs. Normally, they're considered a little heavier (and sturdier) cars for the class. Since this looks more like a K-class car, it's about 2200lbs at most.

I think whoever has an 2ZZ MR-S would know its gas mileage. A friend of mine with one says around 37MPG as long as you don't push past 3500 RPM, which you don't really need to at all unless you weight 400lbs.

Scion Previews a Trio of iQ Tuned Concept Cars Ahead of SEMA (http://carscoop.blogspot.com/2011/10/scion-previews-trio-of-iq-tuned-concept.html)
After being originally revealed around the world with Toyota's badges and later on, with Aston Martin's name on its hood, the iQ reached U.S. shores as a Scion earlier this month, so it's only reasonable that the Japanese carmaker wants to create some buzz around the car.

There's more to come, but for the time being we have pictures and details on three customized iQs: the iQ-MR by Tatsu, the iQ-RX by Jon Sibal (yes, that Jon Sibal) and the iQ-RS by Michael Chang.

Is Toyota Readying Sports Version of the iQ? (http://carscoop.blogspot.com/2011/12/patent-scoop-is-toyota-readying-sports.html)
At this point, we don’t have any information on the car, but we see from the pictures that the iQ is fitted with a wide body kit that includes a bespoke front bumper with a large front grille and side openings, widened wheel arches, and a new rear bumper housing a diffuser and twin tail pipes, plus a roof spoiler that wraps around the rear windshield.

The iQ seen here is also fitted with regular exterior mirrors which further points to a production model.

Up until now, the sportiest version of the iQ was a limited edition for the Japanese market prepared by Toyota's motorsports partner Gazoo Racing.

'GRMN iQ Supercharger' to be Launched Summer 2012 (http://www.autoblog.com/2012/01/13/toyota-greenlights-iq-supercharger-concept-for-production-w-vid/)
Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) is displaying a total of 15 vehicles, including five concept vehicles from "GAZOO Racing tuned by MN" (GRMN) and "G Sports"1 (G's), plus production vehicles, at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2012 with NAPAC2. The Tokyo Auto Salon, the world's largest customized car exhibition, is being held at Makuhari Messe in Chiba City from today through January 153.

TMC views the Tokyo Auto Salon as a place where peoples' dreams about automobiles convene, and as such has actively exhibited there. Building on last year's show, TMC hopes to spark an even wider range of people's interest in the joy of owning, driving and discussing automobiles developed through GAZOO Racing4 activities.

The main concept vehicle on display is the "GRMN iQ Supercharger" prototype, a second-generation GRMN supercharged ultra compact scheduled for a limited 100-unit launch5 this summer. Based on the "iQ 130G MT "6, the GRMN iQ Supercharger features enhanced driving performance and seeks a feeling of integration between vehicle and driver. Also on display from the GRMN series are the "GRMN Sports Hybrid Concept II" and the "GRMN Vitz Turbo Concept", as well as the G's series' "Mark X G Sports Concept II" and "Vellfire G Sports Concept" sports-conversion models.

Part of TMC's exhibition space is an area devoted to custom versions of the compact, rear-wheel-drive sports car "86" ("hachi-roku"), a vehicle extremely popular at the Tokyo Motor Show 2011. On display are two custom models and also the "GAZOO Racing Toyota FT-86" that competed in the 2011 Nürburgring endurance race. (TMC plans to compete again this year with an 86 from GAZOO Racing.) The display will also feature aerodynamic parts, wheels and other accessories to give consumers a clear idea of the 86's expansive customization possibilities.

During the exhibition, TMC is holding virtual events on GAZOO Metapolis7, a Japanese-language website featuring a virtual city (http://metapolis.toyota.co.jp). Also, the GAZOO website (in Japanese) has a special, exhibition-focused section (http://gazoo.com/racing/event/autosalon2012). Videos from the venue will be posted on Ustream and information will be available on web-based social-media sites such as Facebook and Twitter to enhance the dialogue between car enthusiasts both inside and outside the exhibition.

To further expand its GAZOO activities, TMC established a full-time GAZOO department this January to create more opportunities for people to easily experience the joy of automobiles. The department will continue to actively conduct various grass-roots motorsports events such as the GAZOO Racing "Waku Doki" circuit events8 and the Toyota GAZOO Racing Festival (TGRF)9.

Toyota greenlights iQ Supercharger Concept for production

By Zach BowmanRSS feed
Posted Jan 13th 2012 11:01AM

Here's a surprise: Toyota has announced the company will produce the iQ Supercharger first unveiled at the 2011 Tokyo Auto Salon in limited quantities. The automaker has confirmed the development at the 2012 Tokyo Auto Salon. The vehicles will be built by partner Gazoo Racing and will feature a brawnier version of the same 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine found in the standard iQ. With a little forced induction on its side courtesy of a supercharger, the engine should be good for 130 horsepower and 133 pound-feet of torque. That's an increase of 36 ponies and 44 lb-ft over the stock configuration.

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2012/01/gazoo-racing-toyota-iq-supercharger-prototype-628.jpg

Like the concept, the production model will wear a not-so-subtle widebody kit, stiffer suspension and more aggressive brakes than its standard siblings. A six-speed manual transmission will be the only gearbox option. Indoors, buyers can expect to find custom seats and gauges that read all the way up to 124 mph.

Toyota and Gazoo Racing only plan to produce 100 of the muscle-bound iQ Supercharger models, and there's no indication its Scion cousin sold in the States will receive a similar treatment. What a shame. Hit the jump for a brief introductory video featuring the original concept as well as the full press release.

got to drive one around the parking lot on Friday. Its a cool little car - and has a rediculous turning radius. The steering felt great and the car felt very flat and planted.

I can't wait to try one on the open road.

Any plans to make parts for it?

The Jury is out on that. With the vehicle only being offered with a CVT and the FRS right around the corner I don't really know how much of a demand there will be for go fast bits. It would certainly be very easy to develop header, midpipe, exhaust and CAI type stuff, but I don't know how well the CVT would fare with additional power on tap.

Drove an iQ home last night. Holy crap - this is a FUN little car. It is VERY planted, very stable, handles 80 - 85 MPH highway speeds without issue, anbd while it is not fast by any means, it is reasonably peppy and fun, and the CVT is fantastic. But the BEST thing is the steering / turning. Not so much from a handling standpoint, although the handling is pretty damn good; but from the best turning radius EVER standpoint. Not to mention the fastest turn in, and most direct best feeling steering of any Toyota I have driven in a LONG time. Turning in a circle in this thing feels like doing a donut because the radius is so tight, and if you throw it into a turn and play with the e-brake the damn car makes you feel like a stunt car hero. Illusive and I spent about 2 hours just playing around with it in the parking lot, doing 180s, 270s and sliding it sideways into parking spots. (It will fit fully sideways in a standard handicapped spot by the way).

LOVED driving, hope to get to take it home again soon.

I had a blast. It's amazing how such a small car can be so fun to toss around.

Pretty neat car!

We have one as a rental to test them out but nobody wants to use them so the porters it to drive it around :D

turns great and makes u-turns like no other wouldn't mind slamming one and dope wheels ,but hopefully it wont be repair costly like the prius.
