I love your work Grim, wish you lived here so I can borrow your gear :chuckles:

I wish I lived there too! I've actually be considering a move out that way in the next year or so. Not all the gear I own, but because I work full time at a photography studio (that work I can't really post up) and I have a couple other photographers that work with me on DetroitExposure.com, we trade and share lots of equipment, so that list is complied of all the equipment I use on the regular. :D.

Mrluilou,

The lens that's most often used on the D80 is The Tokina 16-50mm..That lens is a TANK. Metal body, rubber coated, F/2.8. 77mm around. It's light considering how big it is. Perfect for carrying around events. It uses the motor in the body to run the autofocus as opposed to having a separate one in the lens itself. I'm STRONGLY considering picking one up with a canon base. Not to mention, optics are quality and the price tag is prettty cheap in comparison to anything like it.

DJ image set I tossed together for a Detroit Underground photo show. Photos aimed at showing the urban underground of Detroit. The City's underground has been small since the raves got busted in the 90's but it's slowly making a come back, but it's far more refined.

It's funny if you're from here, The mayor of Detroit (The new one, not the one that went to jail) will be attending, so I photoshopped him to make him look like a DJ. GrimIndustries

Microcenter is becoming a rather big company, and are making their mark by providing cheap storage media, in the form of usb drives, CF and SD/Micro SD cards. It's quality stuff, they just buy it direct, and brand it with their name. So you're not paying the markup of the other companies.

I love the store and they always have everything I need, as you can see from the site, their inventory is pretty extensive.

As far as making it work in your camera...I haven't the slightest if it will... I know it works in the D80...

On an awesome note, I picked up 2 of these today!!!!! I'm so excited.

are those to replace your strobes when you have shoots?

GrimIndustries
07-23-2009, 11:26 AM
They aren't really powerful enough to replace strobes for lots of things, but when it comes to commercial shoots for things like, clothing, art, etc, these are perfect. The create very even, clean light.

I used my friends Kinos for this clothing shoot, here is a couple images..

don't softboxes create even light??

GrimIndustries
07-27-2009, 07:40 PM
They do, but they also limit it, making it harder to shoot stuff in the daylight outside with hot lights. Since we shoot a lot outside for work, I need as much light as possible, without dragging a strobe setup around. :D

Can I ask for your...personal...opinion?

How do you like the Canon 17-55mm? And in comparison to the Tokina 16-50mm?

GrimIndustries
07-28-2009, 11:51 PM
I can't really accurately compare the 2 of them as far as using the same body. The Tokina is the all around lens on the Nikon D80. I really like both lenses.

They're both F2.8 all the way through, which is helpful.
Both 77mm diameter, giving you lots of glass to work with.
They both focus quickly.
DOF is a tad different for both, 17-55 falls out quick, where the Tokina give you a more gradual fall out.
The Canon has the built in stabilization, but the Tokina is a freakin' beast of a lens. It's rubber coated and the focus ring serves as the auto/manual focus switch. You can click the entire ring forward and backward to activate/deactivate the focus mode. When it's in autofocus, the ring spins freely, so it's sure not to cause any damage to the lens.

I guess it really depends on what you plan to use it for, and what body you're shooting with. If you're shooting with digital body that isn't full frame, then I suggest the Tokina. For the price, it's hard to beat, and with a smaller sensor, any chromatic aberrations (achromatism) you encounter for having cheaper optics, will be less noticeable, and easier to edit out, since the sensor isn't as sensitive.

If you're shooting with a full frame digital body, then you might as well dump the change for the Canon. Besides, 17mm on a full frame camera is super wide, if that's what you're going for. There is nothing like having canon or nikkor glass, but with a regular price, just shy of a grand, it makes 650 look pretty good...

my .02.

Kangaruu
07-29-2009, 12:02 AM
Hmm...well that didn't really sway my mind either direction

I thought the 17-55mm was EF-S and has FTM so I wouldn't mess up the focus motor anyways if I turned the focus ring while it's autofocusing...

GrimIndustries
07-29-2009, 12:11 AM
Yeah, I know, it cant really mess it up, but I just love the security of the Tokina, even if it means nothing, I guess I'm a sucker for things like that haha. What body are you shooting with?

mrluilou
07-29-2009, 10:52 AM

New shot from 1am last night in a 7-11. Its a photo for a art opening, curated by the editor of REAL Detroit Magazine. The show is called "Post Apocalyptic Motor City" and that's obviously the theme as well. Also Mrluilou, I think you asked for some shots of some of my lighting set ups, so I had my buddy shoot a couple while I was shooting. I'll toss those up soon for you.

Used the 40D with 18-50mm Lens, 2 4-Bank Kino Flo's and a 580ex II with a wireless trigger... It's not done yet, so I just took a screen shot of it.

The flash was mainly hitting her chest/neck/face/hair haha. The dress was dark so I wanted to get some highlights out of it. She does have big hair but she's adorable and I couldn't think of anyone better for this shoot.

I considered dropping money into expensive triggers, but the ebay ones work great! I've never had a problem with the 2 receivers and the one transmitter I have.

I only ever go back to using a hot-shoe cable when I'm shooting really dark parties, to assist with focus. Nikon did it right, allowing you to use the timing light as an auto focus assist beam if you set the camera up to do so. Canon designed it to function off of their pop-up flash to light up the subject to find focus, or if you're using a speedlight, then it uses the inferred beam. Unfortunately, that beam doesn't function wirelessly so I'm forced to use the cord. :/.

I haven't had the chance to look at the new ones, but they are sweet. I love mine and they hold up well. My speedlights have fallen from high distances onto the receivers and they explode into pieces, but always go back together without a problem haha.

JOHN_B and I are really excited to move in and get things rolling. Tomorrow all the paper work will be completed and then we'll get the keys and start painting and getting everything in order. It'll make business run so much smoother, having our very own studio and offices to meet our clients.

Me growing up as poor kid from Detroit, JOHN_B coming from nothing in the Philippines and both of us being only 22, this is a big step for us in moving up in the world of professional photography, and we've had to make a lot of sacrifices to make things work...

but we're both happy to say we're holding on to our GT-S's :gap:

GrimIndustries
01-26-2010, 10:25 AM
I'll be sure to share photos as we build out the space!

As for our focus, we've gained so much popularity and publicity so quickly because we're such a mixed bag. We will always be doing our concerts and nightlife photography, and through the contacts and contracts, we've secured doing that, we've been shooting lots of portraits and press packs of these producers, musicians and DJ's, as well as the fashion designers (and their clothing) in the area.

Both of us having a love for cars, and living in Detroit, we've been working on expanding our focus into commercial photography for the car companies here.

Aside from that, we always seem to pick up the young, edgy, hipster style weddings, that really appreciate the artistic side of photography, so that always provides another avenue of income.

very good quality shots, gotta love the 5d mark II =]

GrimIndustries
01-28-2010, 12:35 AM
Depends on what I'm shooting and what's getting published. In this case, I got paid to do the shoot, but also maintained copyright on the images, which would allow me to get paid from them being published.

The designer paid me well from the get go and her connections (She's Eminem's personal/professional stylist) have gotten me tons of other gigs, so I just let them do it for free.

Unfortunately, the 5D Mark II is only a work camera, owned by the studio I work for and I can't take it home. Most every photo in this thread is either Canon 40D, Nikon D80 or D300. Once I settle into the new studio and business starts rolling, I will make the jump my very own 5D Mark II, and I'll also try and grip up a regular 5D so I'm shooting full frame with both cameras. :D

So, the studio is up and going, we're gonna have the ribbion cutting in mid April most likely. We wanna make sure everything is running smooth before we fill it full of people an potential clients :D. Anyway. Picked up an 85mm F1.2L. Pretty much the best portrait lens ever. The depth of field is so shallow and it creates amazing bokeh. Here are a few natural light shots with the 85.

Yeah, it was really far away. Hundreds of feet. Press was to shoot from the soundboard and it was in one of the largest venues in MI. I had 2 cameras going, one with a wide, one with the zoom.

40D - 24-70mmL F2.8
Mark II - 70-200mmL F2.8 w/IS (some shot with the 2x teleconverter which makes it a 140-400mm and knocks it down to F5.6)

Yup, 5D Mark II. The teleconverter slowing the lens down, does indeed suck, but the fact that the IS stops working when you use it, sucks more :[.

GrimIndustries

Thank you!,

Traditionally, no, the lenses are not interchangeable. They do make goofy adaptor rings to mount nikon on canon and vv, but the autofocus system doesn't work when you do that, and some of the you loose F-stop control, it all depends, but typically, canon with canon, nikon with nikon.

The one of of that isn't has a Nikon D300s and a D80 as his back up cam, but as soon as Nikon releases something like the D300s, but full frame, I'm sure he'll scoop it up.

Preferred glass right now for me would include...

Low MP output, so it makes it harder to do commercial stuff, and he wants the video option as well. We do pretty good with the video stuff on top of the photo stuff. As soon as they have a D700 with video, I'm sure he'll buy it haha.

GrimIndustries

Thanks guys!

I am usually the main shooter for weddings and such. I have the experience and handle all the wedding clients and John just started doing wedding stuff so he's getting "broken in". But I love shooting with him. He's the most competent second shooter I've ever had, and makes excellent decisions on placement, exposures, composition etc. Being my one of my best friends helps, we have similar styles and influences, so we both know what we're lookin' for.

The Canon 45mm f2.8 isn't TOO bad considering how expensive they can get. But you're right, it's a lot of money for a lens that's more or less a novelty; at least that's what I thought, until I found myself wanting to use it in portraits. It takes lots of practice and good eyes since all you've got is manual focus.
